What's scary is that there are still people calling this the flu, and it's not unreasonable to suggest that we will lap the flu death toll from the last flu season. It's worth noting that we had more deaths than usual in that flu season as well.

I get that we need to open up, I just wish we did a stricter lock down for when we were locked down. If we committed to a real lock down that most people stuck to and we still opened up now, we may have had half this many deaths. I don't talk politics much outside of a few jokes, but this was a nationwide failure and how anyone can say Trump did a good job is beyond me. And I'm not laying the blame just on Trump, as I said for the most part this was a nation wide problem, but it's crystal clear that he was part of the problem. For him and his supporters to hold him up as a hero for how he acted just isn't true. If you can't recognize his failure, you are beyond hope. The country as a whole has failed it's people, and lets be honest, too many people in this country deserve that failure. Between protests, idiot kids, Covid deniers, we sadly had no shot.

Failing to go the distance and keeping the lock down in place through May, plus all the instances of people ignoring guidelines, is why they are no projecting twice the death they were saying two weeks ago.

I completely agree. Our lock down was dog shit. We went to 1.4 million DURING the lockdown, and I'm positive that it's several times higher. The ~30k new cases we've been getting is more likely to be how many we can test in a day rather than how many actual new cases we get. You pretty much have to be on death's door to get tested...or rich and famous.

But you do realize how easy it is to spin that number into good news right? Someone will say that that shows 99.95% of us will still be here. No, that would only be plausible if the virus spreads to about 20,000,000 or in the US. At the current case fatality rate, the number of COVID-19 cases in the US would have to reach 16,890,060 in order to hit 1,000,000 deaths.

Quarantine and social distancing efforts are how we hope to keep that from happening. We're fortunate that we don't have more places like NYC where millions of people are commonly walking around the city in close quarters.
