Im probably not shit at my job, but i find it hard not to take mistakes personally you know what I mean? Think Ive mentioned it before and someone here said its called imposter syndrome. Not much has changed, still sometimes feel like Im shit at my job and Im gonna get found out when something happens. How do you even stop that?

Despite the fact that Ive got my degree and managed to get a job and have been promoted twice with a change of companies in between, when something goes wrong I instantly think of reasons why. Usually its something like maybe Im just inexperienced, maybe I fast tracked myself into the role without grinding it out like most people would have or maybe I should have paid more attention at university.

feels bad man

Yep, imposter syndrome! I had a lot of discussions about this in graduate school, mostly centered on being from a underrepresented group and feeling out of place, like we didn't belong there, or like our accomplishments didn't count as much as pour peers so we feel like we have to work twice as hard to prove we belonged there.

PM me if you wanna talk more about this shit.

My manager have spoken to me on multiple occasions about not doubting myself so long as my reasons are sound or trying to make the impossible work.

I remembered a project where doubted my calculations and wanted them checked by another engineer. Finally my manager and I contacted the manufacturer and even they agreed the parts bought for a specific purpose were too small/weak for said purpose and whoever quoted our client made a mistake.

The whole time I kept thinking I was making a mistake somewhere in my calculations and turns out my numbers were correct.

Me too. I've gotten into a habit of saying, "I'm so ****in' good" when I do something really good though. Some things I am absolutely confident about. Other things, there's too much design freedom, and I'm not sure if I'm using the most optimal method.

Also, the most annoying part of working with cities is they always change their damn website. They all use the "same" forms/details, but different. It's not simple enough to just save their PDFs/CAD on your network in an organized place.

Besides the guidelines my supervisor or some manufacturers have given us, I do find it interesting what components clients are willing to go with.

Some uses the worst case scenario components across the States even if it is not cost effective. I can only assume they may have purchased the material in bulk or it helps streamline the process without them having to order different sizes for each location.

Some will choose the smallest/lightest component for each different loading even if it means dozens of different components used all over a warehouse. In the end, my supervisor just told me there is more going on behind the scene between our client and the end user and simply not something I should be concern with.
