currently addicted to the first and am pretty close to completing it (fucking bed of chaos.) I'm for sure getting III but am on the fence about II. I heard different things but I really enjoy the souls games so

Yes, but get the Scholar of the First Sin edition, it contains all the DLC and mixes up the base game, meaning you can get certain items earlier, which are quite useful/powerdul.

I did read this and that you can find an item that will decrease the penalty of death early on. the fact that you lost some of your health bar with each death did turn me off a little but then I remembered that you lost like 50% of your health after a death in Demon's Souls so that put things in perspective

The games a mixed bag. It has the best PvP and build variety. It also has the a lot of the worst level design in the series, obnoxious enemy placement at times, and the world doesnt make much sense geographically.

Overall, its still an 8/10 for me. I see why many people consider is the worst in the series, but theres still good stuff in there.

Losing a little but of health as you hollow isn't as bad as it sounds, but I admit I love not worrying about it at all in 3

2's still great, though

I personally liked it. It has some of / my favorite characters from the series in it. Lucatiel of Mirrah being my absolute favorite of the series is one of them.

Honestly, I should probably try it out again, since I never played SoTFS. I might've got burnt out on the first half of the game because I tried to duel-wield claws (I wanted to be Wargreymon and I wanted to mess with power stancing). It made the first half of the game hell since claws don't do much to armored enemies. I eventually switched to a curved greatsword for the second half, and that's where I started liking the game a lot more.

It's my least favorite, but still recommend it.

It is a GREAT game and Scholar of the First Sin at 60FPS is so smoooooooth

If you want to play DS2, play it after you finish DS1. The combat improvements made in DS3 make it a little hard to go back to DS2, but other than that it is a VERY solid game

DS II: SotFS--XBO/PS4/PC versions, yes to both; 360/PS3 versions are DLCs only (no remix).

P.S.: DLCs are the best part of DS II. IMO, Crown of the Old Iron King is the most challenging... risky, but *great* loot.

A tip for if you try it

Enemies only respawn a set number of times so if you want you can clear out enemies by killing them over and over until they dont come back. This makes loot farming a problem, and can be exploited to make the game easier.

Now if you dont want that at the first town is a covenant you can join (champions I think?) it not only makes the enemies in the game a wee bit stronger, but they also respawn forever so you can farm them, and not run out of enemies to fight.

oh yeah, definitely use item-finding gear before you try to grind for rare drops. the sea bow comes to mind...

AND the reward for that covenant (Vanquishers Ring?) Is my favorite ring in the game. You dont even need a weapon, just your fists. It allows you to Power Wield your FISTS

That is/was a fun ring. Did they nerf it? Heck the nerfed everything so most likely.

some sketchy design choices aside its still a souls game. albeit the "worst" one, but even that pretty much means it doesnt go below an 7.5/10. keep your expectation in check especially if youre still riding the first ones high and its still a good time.

I'm still mad about the changes to lighting spears being a straight nerf all around and never fixed

Even better when you are out damaging your friend using the greatsword and you just keep wailing since it takes so little stamina

Vanq Seal has been nerfed once or twice

Anyways, as far as DS2 goes

PROS:

Best PvP
Best build vatiety
Powerstancing
Best DLC of the series

CONS:

Horrible enemy placement, getting to the boss is generally harder than the actual boss
World design isnt the best (better than 3, worse than 1)
Adaptability/agility
