Do you think stand your ground laws give too much power to people to kill others?

Georgia's attorney general has now asked the US Dept of Justice to investigate the handling on the murder of Ahmaud Arbery from 2 white men after he said the shooting was JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE!!

Arbery was killed in February 23, 2020 as no arrests were made until now as national outrage over it swelled last week when video surfaced showing the hillbillies waiting for arbery before the younger fat one got out of his truck with his shotgun and confronted him before shooting Arbery.

Attorney General Chris Carr said "We are committed to a compelte and transparent review of how Ahmaud Arbery case was handled from the outset. The family, the community and the state of Georgia deserve answers and we will work with others in law enforcement at the state and federal level to find those answers"

This comes as it emerged that Georgia DA recused himself fromthis after stating the shooting was justified.

George Barnhill Sr, the top prosecutor told police there was insufficient evidence to charge Travis and Greg McMichael

Barnhill determined there were no legal grounds to arrest and try the father and son and allowed self defense laws to allow citizens to detain anyone suspected of committing a crime. It was also determined that the father worked in his office as an investigator until 2019, along with Jackie Johnson who blocked police from arresting them.

Do you think Stand your Ground laws give too much power to people to kill others?

Fucking hell, is there anyone, not trolls, who think the killing was actually justified?

Like if you told the story to someone who hadn't heard it but left out the race of both sides, would that person think it was a good judgment call?

I don't feel like any reasonable stand your ground law should apply here. This was an offensive action and not done for self-protection.

Right. Even if you're mugged, if you chase down your attacker and kill him, you will still get into trouble for it.

It's bullshit. I shouldn't fear being killed if I decide to mug someone.

This wasnt stand your ground, they were armed and he wasnt. They obviously chased him in a truck. Its not their job to detain or enforce laws.

call the police, let them deal with it.

In my interpretation of the law, stand your ground laws should not apply if your aggressive actions put you in such a position of danger.

You cant be the aggressor and the cause of the conflict and then claim self-defense.

The citizens arrest bullshit Georgia has on the books muddies the waters considerably.

This is still murder, by any reasonable and modern standard of justice.

I actually looked up the relevant law for their citizens arrest stuff.

They'd have to reasonably believe he was in the act of carrying out a crime. However, to say they were stopping him from fleeing a crime scene would require they actually saw the crime he was allegedly fleeing from. More than that, there's also laws regarding proper use of force. Two armed men is definitely excessive for arresting a single man fleeing when they could have simply tried physically restraining him. To escalate immediately to guns, that's exceeding the word of the law.

Oh. And there was that neighbor who supposedly joined in. He'd have not witnessed or had any cause to say he believed the victim had committed a crime, so if he actually got involved he'd not actually qualify for any protection under the law.

Of course, the father being a former cop means they'll stress that and that he "believed" it was necessary force. And the victim being black and it being Georgia, I'm sure they'll walk on his murder, if only on appeals.

it feels like those laws could be easily used to kill anyone all they have to do is claim they thought the target was a criminal and thats it no proof of crime needed .........

hope this isnt how it works
