We have troll bots posting propaganda online every day, swaying peoples opinions. People need to stop assuming the accounts you see online are actual people, because theyre quite possibly not.

Over the past 10 years, the internet has become weaponized. Its how people are controlled now. And thats terrifying.

Social media has people coming up with crazy ass conspiracy theories. Everyone argues online and people create these fake inflated online personas. I feel like 90% of the shit posting you see online would never happen by those same people in person.

How do we fix this, you ask? Simple. Remove the anonymity from the internet. If you wanna leave a comment, you gotta submit a selfie every single time. That way we can see the face of these dumbasses who troll and say a bunch of crazy shit online.

But do those positives outweigh the massive amounts of negatives from a digital world? I dont think so.

Theres gotta be a way to make the online world more like the real world. In the sense that the actions you choose to take have actual consequences. The internet is the Wild West right now, and if it continues on this route, itll be what destroys humanity.

prolly not, kids these days are growing up with iphones and ipads at younger and younger ages, going on reddit and message boards and youtube, looking up things and learning more and more everyday, becoming more dependent on it, using social media at young ages, etc

anti-internet movements or controlled / censored movements would just be considered anti-free speech

It won't work. You do realise most of the fake news come from Facebook, right? ANd most troll accounts do have pictures and even full freaking bios and a timeline. That's how smart internet bots are nowadays at replicating to such fine detail. There's even a site that randomly generates a completely 100% realistic but non-existent selfie for you to use

theres a lot more to the internet than just Facebook. Whats a better solution to hold people accountable then? Maybe a unified login system for the internet.

While there are obviously a lot of faceless, likely sock puppet accounts, there are plenty of real ones that do much the same stuff too in my experience. Then there's the whole middle ground of people adopting other people's identities etc. To me, the level at which any sort of identification system would need to operate to actively curtail the spread of 'fake news' is borderline impossible and would be likely open to abuse in other ways if it did exist.

It's also not really something I feel like people actually mean, more like a more reasonable sounding extension of all the 'say that to my face and see what happens!' stuff you see online

I haven't looked into this but i'm going to venture that bots are capable of uploading an image for a selfie or that the people making them would program them to do so as soon as this become a requirement.

And fuck this idea in general, I don't want to have to do this to post.

Christopher Titus called out a Black Trump supporter who tried to claim the media silenced him because he's a Trump supporter by basically telling him no bro, you're just not funny.

The bots that came out the woodwork to attack Titus was incredible.

Most of them got numbers after their username, they got a pic of "their" face, a generic bio with American flag emojis, and then they just endlessly retweet pro-Trump stuff, and only messages they type themselves is when they reply to shit. Absolutely nothing personal is posted, just endless retweets of pro-Trump stuff, and agreeing with pro-Trump tweets other say.

The shit is scary.

Im wary of this. It seems a lot of people are assuming the ideology they agree with is not going to be the one censored or that they will have access and undesirables (for lack of a better word) wont. This scenario would be wide open for abuse, whether its coming from the government, corporations or some other special interest group.

If the traditional media doesn't like that people get their news online, they should probably 1) vet things better so they actually look like they're doing a better job than twitter, not the other way around, 2) actually represent the public rather than their own niche ideological interests that have caused them to lose much of their audience, and 3) do some original reporting and stop relying on twitter themselves.

There have always been dumb or misguided people, but they've never had a platform to organize on before. Headcases were mostly limited to basements, or, having somehow gained financial independence, that guy who lives alone with boarded up windows.

Now they organize, and trick soccer moms into thinking vaccines are the devil.

lol You say theres nothing wrong with the internet

then you describe exactly whats wrong with the internet in your next paragraph. Im getting mixed signals here bro.

you kinda also missed the whole point of the topic. Even if people were more literate with how to process info online, it doesnt help that fake accounts promote agendas by specific individuals/nations that somehow have stakes in a certain viewpoint.

well, if a group/indivvidual is promoting a viewpoint with stuff that no one reads or takes credibly... I don't know how much of a problem that is really? and they'd probably stop doing it eventually if it wasn't getting any results because people know better than that

the amount of misinformation back then isnt even remote comparable to the scope and entirety of the internet. This isnt just about social media. Its about the entire concept of the internet, and lack of accountability for the users.

It's not really a matter of fault, the solution just has to solve the problem. Either make the tool easier to use, or have better education on how to use it.

We do teach people how to drive, we have a test for it, and yet there are enough people who are so incredibly stupid with cars that over a million people die from car crashes each year.

So we have the education. We have standards for driving, and people who live up to those standards temporarily. It isn't a lack of technical ability, it's an attitude problem. So what then? Driving tests don't filter as well as they should, so the market demanded cars that know when to break, or can drive themselves.
