Ive been going through the pitchfork 90s and 00s top 100 albums lists and while they do have a good variety and have introduced me to some great stuff I hadnt heard, its also clear theyre missing a lot of essentials in favor of ambient electronic bullshit in many cases

recommend lists of must-hear 70s/80s/90s albums, or just recommend must-hear albums please

This is the type of stuff I need. The problem is lists of 70s and 80s albums are too dominated by the (obviously great) stuff that of course Ive heard before. Stuff like this:

Time is the great crap filter. The best stuff never goes away, and only the notoriously worst of the rest is even still remembered.

I'll just give you some great albums from that 70s-90s period. I'm an album rocker, so I only keep good, full albums on hand. I'll just pick a song you're sure to love.

Rory Gallagher - Top Priority
Rory's one of Ireland's all-time great guitarists (RIP). His albums aren't always even, but he's a great one to hear. I'd normally recommend Irish Tour '74, but as a sampler, live albums might be too overwhelming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGlAkiCN4-M

Del the Funky Homosapien - I Wish My Brother George Was Here
90s rapper about funny subjects from someone with mad skills. He always gets short shrift for some reason.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkgQE5OOW88

Chisel - Set You Free
Absolutely no one mentions this in the best 90s albums topics, but I love it. This is Ted Leo's band before he had better success with the Pharmacists. His voice might take a little getting used to, but the album is awesome.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JHtmMq8Lx8

Magazine - The Correct Use of Soap
Howard Devoto made this band after leaving the Buzzcocks. The first album has more definitive hits, but in terms of listening all the way through, I like this one the most. If you enjoy Devoto's songs, you might want to try Luxuria, too. He's known for his ascerbic wit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnAoBtZScIE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP6zcyr1wyA

Stanley Clarke - School Days
SC is a fusion jazz bassist with insane chops who played in Return to Forever. Dunno if you listen to fusion, but it's basically the fun of jazz but usually with more melody and less annoying parts, haha. I highly doubt you'll get recommended this in a casual 70s list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZLLv4s4WvI

Squeeze - Argybargy
People compared to Difford and Tilbrook to Paul and John for good reason. Great album, and so's their follow-up. This isn't that obscure or anything, but maybe you haven't heard it, in which case, let's change that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAmmziBtzE

The Comsat Angels - My Mind's Eye
Actually an 80s band, I find I like this 90s album the most. Pretty enjoyable all the way through.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1wXbR9mGPI

Y Kant Tori Read - s/t
Someone once recommended this to me as a joke, but I listened through and it's friggin' fantastic. Basically Tori Amos in her pre-stardom years belting out classics she'd later disavow. It's quite good for 80s balladeering, especially since most have some edge to 'em.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXUR-ZM4tXs

The Style Council - Our Favourite Shop
This is Paul Weller's band after he left The Jam. I find a lot of his albums uneven, so this is probably the only one I'd say is great all the way through. It's usually blue-eyed soul plus some 80s rock (maybe even a little funkiness in there????). Paul's voice was one of the Jam's best parts, so he kicks ass here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Nbngy7WDY

Kirsty MacColl - Kite
Kirsty was part of the Pogues and had a ridiculously good solo album in the late 80s. Sadly, she died in a motorboat accident later in life, but this is a great reminder of her powerful voice and good songwriting.

I'll post a few more while I have my file list in front of me

Eric Gales - Picture of a Thousand Faces
It's true that his songwriting isn't always as sharp as his guitar, but he's not just another Hendrix disciple. His best work IMO comes past the 90s, but if you just want some great hard rock, his early albums hit that spot. At the very least, he clowns on Lenny Kravitz 99% of the time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uR7KqV1w5NM

Hunter-Ronson Band - YUI Orta
Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson (RIP), a.k.a. two stars from Mott the Hoople. They cut this around the end of the 80s and it's insanely good, possibly better than a lot of Mott material. High praise, but nearly every song is a winner. If you like Bowie, you may have already explored Hoople stuff (he wrote "All the Young Dudes," remember.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5bFCeVqxAU

Phil Ochs - Pleasures of the Harbor
I don't think this is as obscure nowadays, and it's late 60s, but I'll include it anyway, since it's amazing, moody, literate (and sometimes menacing) folk and way more atypical than you'd expect. Side A has the more uptempo, catchier songs like "Cross My Heart" and "Miranda," but it's the longer songs like "The Party" and "The Crucifixion" that really shine.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFi7_U1a9VA

Jill Jones - s/t
I think I discovered this last year myself and was shocked at how good it is. Jill is one of Prince's many protegees from his classic period, and while she never shot to stardom like some others, her debut is way more competent than anyone would expect. She wears the Minneapolis funk pretty well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_j3UOSUXCA

Loud Family - The Tape of Only Linda
Scott Miller (also RIP) made this band after Game Theory. Honestly, a lot of his albums are wildly uneven, since he did tape experiments and all kinds of stupid crap. But this album is, as far as I'm concerned, one of his crowning achievements. Good all the way through and probably not something people would stumble on unless they love Big Star-esque jangle rock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAvlf3m5N88

Nic Jones - Penguin Eggs
This is another folk rec by one session guitarist/solo artist Nic Jones. IIRC, it's all done acoustically, and his emotive playing is really something to behold. I think all the songs are British traditional tunes, so that can be a bit sketchy for prospective listeners, but if you're into this style, it's great all the way through. This came out just a few years before his car accident messed up his ability to play this well, sadly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlFKwY_YgZ4

Sugar - Copper Blue /// Nova Mob - The Last Days of Pompeii
After Husker Du's dissolution, Bob Mould formed Sugar and Grant Hart formed Nova Mob. Although each band only had two records, they're both quite good, with Sugar being a bit more straightforward 90s rock with great press, and Nova Mob doing a bit more messy, experimental takes and not getting as much acclaim. I would suggest checking out both if you like their solo work or Husker Du in general, because all four albums are pretty great.

80s/90s/early 2000s rap research is pretty much on the listener themselves. Since rap is so focused on lyrics, the best recommendation is to not get caught up in others recommendations.

If you really are into lists heres one for the top 100 rap albums made by The Source in 1998:

http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/source.htm#100albums

Also, good advice with rap is to follow friends/labels/neighborhoods. Theres generally crossover.

ive been using aoty.org which aggregates a lot of them. Problem with aggregation though is it filters out a lot of lesser known stuff

gonna post a bunch of my favorite albums that aren't on those pitchfork lists, but i've actually heard almost every album from the 70s-2000s lists and i'd say there is a lot more good than bad

70s:

Magma - Kobaia
and Mkank Dstrukt Kmmandh

Black Sabbath - S/T
Joe Mcphee - Nation Time
Flower Travelin band - Satori
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner mounting flame
Agitation free - Malesch
Todd Rungren - A Wizard, a True Star
Mike Oldfield - Tubular bells
Harmonia (first two albums)
Missus Beastly - 2nd self titled album ( albums that follow are also very good, but no AS good)
Gentle Giant - The power and the glory (though their stuff that came before is also very good, but this is the peak imo)
NEU 75 (their first album is even better but it's on pitchfork's list)
Klaus Schulze - X
Tangerine dream - Phaedra to Stratosphere
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Jeanne Michel Jarre - Oxygene and Equinoxe
Ashra - New Age of Earth
ELO - Out of the Blue
Talking heads 77 (the next 3 albums are all better and all on pitchfork lists)
David Bowie - Heroes (most of his 70s work is a must listen)
Earth Wind and Fire - All n All
Magazine - Real Life

alright now the 80s

Echo and the Bunnymen - Crocodile
Killing Joke S/T
Bauhaus - In the Flat Field
U2 - War
Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca
The Buggles - Both albums are highly recommended by me. One of the most underrated bands of all time
Tatsuro Yamashita - For You

The Cure
everything from faith to Disintegration (on pitchfork list) is great minus the top which is good
Disintegration is their best but i also highly recommend Pornography and Head on the Door
Faith and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me are also well worth listening to

Tears for Fears - The Hurting and Songs from the Big Chair
Aztec Camera- High Land, Hard Rain
Metallica - Kill em all and RTL (you almost certainly have listened to them)
Slayer - Hell Awaits
Bathory - The Return... and under the sign
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath
XTC favorite band of all time everything starting with Drum and Wires is really really good at worst imo their 3 best are on the pitchfork lists including Skylarking, which is my favorite album of all time.

Legendary Pink Dots - Everything from Aslyum (1985) to All the King's Horses (2002) is worth listening to imo
1986's Island of Jewels and 1998's Nemesis Online are their best though

Dead Can Dance - Spleen and Ideal to the Serpent's egg

Nick Cave - Tender Prey and Your Funeral, my Trail
Butthole Surfers - Locust abortion technician
Poison - Into the Abyss (not the glam metal band!) primitive black metal
Sarcofago - I.N.R.I
Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses
Swans - Children of God
Death SS - ...In Death of Steve Sylvester
Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
Rapeman - Two Nuns and a pack mule. Terrible band name, one of the greatest noise rock albums of all time
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Nirvana - Bleach
Godflesh - Street Cleaner

Some must listen albums imo, pretty varied I think

70s

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori (early Japanese heavy metal with touches of psychedelic rock, one long song in parts)

Can - Ege bamyas (Funky, experimental, some of the best drumming ever)

Miles Davis - Dark Magus (It's not exactly jazz, not exactly funk, not really like any fusion you might here. Just balls to the wall insanity in a good way)

Big Star - 3rd (depressing power pop)

Pere Ubu - This Modern Dance (early post-punk)

80s

Siousxie and the Banshees - Tinderbox (goth rock/post punk, powerful vocals and guitar)

Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll (ethereal dream pop)

90s

Robert Pollard - Not in my Airforce (lo fi, indie rock kind of power pop)

Bardo Pond - Amanita (heavy psych rock with flute and female vocals)

Sun City Girls - 330,003 Crossdressers From Beyond the Rig Veda (Long sprawling album of improvisations, Asian folk songs, bollywood soundtrack covers and strange moments of rock)

Uncle Bobs best years are behind him, but theres usually at least a few tracks on anything he does. The mans a national treasure.

theres a record of just his drunk stage banter, and thats very worth hearing.

If you want a good space rock album, try Hawkwind's Space Ritual. Double album with all kinds of good stuff on it.
