I wish the original had as much filler as the remake.

I know I put spoilers in the title but you can check out the TL;DR, it's spoiler free. I really don't think you need to play the game, it's very mediocre and relies heavily on nostalgia. Yet at the same time it is a bit of a fuck you to fans, and Nomura just goes nuts with very shallow Kingdom Hearts-style fuckery

i read your topic and i find it eye opening...especially when you said "this is certainly not a game for someone who never played the original" which i fall into

i was hoping it would appeal to both newcomers and nostalgic fans of VII

Trust me, it does not. It very much requires having played the original game. Both in callbacks but also in how the plot turns out towards the end.

I wouldn't say it's necessary to play the original, but there are certain things you won't pick up on if you don't. You can still enjoy the remake.

Having said that, you should play the original.

Good for him! The fact remains that the story it's telling presupposes knowledge of the original story.

I think people should play the original regardless. I like the remake, but the original is a masterpiece.

FF7 was far more impressive when it came out than it is now. Very few games will ever drum up that sense of awe and wonder.

Seems to be the one thing the REmake will be never be able to provide.

Having never played the original and watching a letsplay of the remake, it seems fine to me.

Just minus the usual JRPG failing to understand basic social interaction dialogue and side quest filler. Most of the nonsense stuff just looks like standard JRPG storytelling from my perspective, so not sure what's new/different compared to the original.

OK but did you watch through the entire game? Events near the end of the game put a lot of things on their head. On top of which there are a bunch of flashes/scenes strewn about which are clearly aimed at people knowing the OG. Investing more heavily in questions that won't get answered until a later installment, like the Tifa scenes at the Nibelheim reactor, or just other nods to returning players, like Cait Sith, the soundtrack, and other minor details. But mostly I'm talking about the ending.

I never played the original and I've had a blast with it. The game play is really great. I don't really have an understanding of what is happening in certain plot points but that's just typical Japanese anime story telling.

This is true to a point, but coming out of the game, you will have a different set of questions than what the writers intended, although the overarching point of them will be the same: "WTF is going on?"

Playthrough I'm watching isn't at the end yet. But so far everything just seems standard JRPG nonsense. Have been a few things which seem obvious nods to the old game, but never felt like the game was ruined because I didn't get them.

Didn't day the game is ruined. However, the emotional tension in the actual climax of the game is heavily predicated on knowledge of the original story, including characters, rivalries and events that have yet to be introduced in the remake.
Of course you can still enjoy the game for what it is (a whole lotta standard JRPG nonsense), but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who didn't play the OG, because it is a game meant to be played after having played the original.
