Thinking of getting it as a backup, in my case my phone's audio jack goes bad.

The issue I've had with recent MP3 players is that they're all super quiet though.

I use a fiio x1 2nd generation. It works really well for what I need. It uses removeable microSD storage. Fiio is a good brand, but I am only familiar with my X1-II. I havent had any quiet issues with it, though there is aqn option to switch between headphones and line in, I guess to unlock higher volumes when you use an AUX cord or something. I've never really needed to use that.

I honestly don't see the point of an mp3 player as a backup. I don't use spotify or anything so I wouldn't use my phone if I have a dedicated MP3 player.

Phones are terrible for that purpose. I had a Rio once which was good. When that stopped turning on one day I found a Sony Walkman. Yep, still a thing just without cassettes. Nice and small with several sound adjustments.

ah yes. in that case I too wonder if there's a decent generic mp3 player that just lets you put audio files on it with relatively no fuss. dealing with itunes and iphone all the time is such a lousy user experience.

Ipods are terrible and stupid simply because you either need itunes to transfer songs, or some kind of workaround to transfer. Though I mean the 2000s ipods, I havent kept up with them since like 2006.

My Fiio-X1-II fits the bill. Removeable storage(microsd) so you just drag and drop files.

I have a 2nd gen Fiio X3. Had an X1 and it broke because it got too hot and the screen fucked up (my fault)

I use a 400gb sb card in it and it works fine.

Highly recommended

I have a pair of sennheiser hd1s I use with it, and they are good enough without breaking the bank
