Been revisiting the older titles during quarantine. I installed Rome 2 + the DEI mod (a simple three part DL on workshop and you're done.) and played on settings I thought would be too high for my rig. Very High, SSAO, 2x AA, and no vsync. Surprisingly, I got 45-60fps everywhere even in comically large battles. Game is super optimized. Attila looked better and had a more grimdark feel, and even if Rome 2 is sunshine and rainbows, it is hard to remember the last time a modern TW game both looked and ran good at the same time for me.

Huge faction and unit diversity. DEI makes the AI less braindead, slows the battles down, normalizes the economy / building system, has 4 turns per year, and expands on the family tree and politically system which at times feels like game of CK2 now. Even though there's over 100 factions, the turn load time is better. Not the best, but better.

So yeah, check it out if you hated it at launch like I did. A few of the DLC campaigns are fun too. Caesar in Gaul is basically Rome dominating barbarians for 150 turns which is great for blasting "Caesar Forever" by Reverend Bizarre and just vibing out to pure Roman bliss.

I tried shogun 2 since it was free, i really liked it until it got to the naval battles. I wasnt a fan of the sea battles.

I bought medieval 2 because it reminded me of lords of the realm, but it feels too archaic and the tutorial was buggy.

So idk, i guess ill stick with warhammer

They're awesome in Rome 2. I can't remember if coastal maps were a thing in Shogun 2, but in Rome, you can actually have a 20v20 navy fight on the harbor of the same city you're sieging, and your ships can help assist and beach if you need it. It's fucking dope. The Naval Combat is nothing but ramjam the other ships and pray to God they light on fire first.
