Abilities and Spells are learned from equipping certain equipment (like a certain staff might teach you Cure, another Fire) and getting AP for it. There are spells and combat abilities, that work just like any other command, and equippable abilities that are permanent buffs of different types. You can only equip so many of those to a single character at once, and different abilities take up more ability "weight".
