The Evil Within is a bad to mediocre game throughout. The Evil Within 2 is a fantastic game though and would highly recommend skipping the first altogether.

It's pretty tough and has some sections that drag on a bit.

Great game though. Not sure if the 360 version is good though.

Weird, I really enjoyed the first one and thought that the second didn't mesh together as well.

Great game. Not sure why it gets so much hate. Loses the horror aspect about halfway through and gets a definite RE4 arsenal feel, but it's not bad by any means.

I agree with this

The first game feels too unfocused and like it's just shit thrown together

Through the first 4 chapters.
I hope there is more story at this point because so far it just seems like a lot of random stuff to creep you out.

A lot of people shit on it, but i loved it. Even the sneaking segments arent annoying and the boss fights are cool as hell.

I also really love the Keeper DLC. You get to play as a bad ass monster and fuck shit up. That and his party trick he uses to get through locked doors is pretty awesome.

Also, I am playing on Casual.
If I was playing on a harder difficulty I know I would just be getting super mad the whole time.

This game is barely chugging along.
I got it cheap, but I will for sure be playing 2 on my PC.

More like Resident Evil Within.

EW1 is what RE6 should have been, it pretty much feels like a Resident Evil reboot. Has some flaws with gameplay and story, but that applies to ALL Resident Evil games and EW1 surpasses most of them.

EW2 then takes the game and turns it into a whole new thing of its own. IMO that robbed it of what made EW1 fun to me, making it worse than EW1, but it's understandable if people enjoy EW2 more.

I'd highly recommend people to play both games. Definitely ignore the recommendations to skip either.

Terrible story, repetative gameplay, boring set-pieces, lame enemies, lame main characters. Completely pointless and unpolished stealth/leveling system.

I think Zero Punctuation summed it up quite well:

It plays like somebody said, "Hey, make a horror game!" And somebody else said, "Okay, what about?" "I've just told you, about horror." "No, I mean what happens in it? What's the context? What are the major themes you want to work with?" "Horror, horror, and horror. Jesus Christ, just do it, why are you so difficult to work with?" And so the result is this undisciplined mishmash of horror set pieces and imagery barely justified by a toilet tissue flimsy plot, populated entirely by stock characters.

Worst part is after giving themselves the advantage of being able to create literally any enviroment or horror set piece that they could possibly think of, they proceed to do the most generic and boring mundane shit you've seen 20 times before. No imagination on display at all.

If it makes you feel any better it ran like crap on the newer consoles too. Took the enhanced models to run well.

I had to be in the right mindset but if you are it's really fun. Some intense shit in the game.

It's one of those rare games where you often think "how the fuck am I meant to do this?" and you somehow do.

You realize all of this applies exactly the same to any Resident Evil, too, right?

Evil Within actually made it more unique by delving into psychology / mental illness and focusing on confusing the player

Not really.

Only 4, 5 and 6

And 4 is way better than Evil Within. In gameplay and creativity.

if you want to brag that Evil Within is less medicore than RE6 then go ahead but that's not much of a claim. It's better than RE: Dead Aim too.

And at least RE6 had co-op.

Idk how many of the Resident Evil guys worked on this other than Mikami, but that makes sense since it takes after those games. Seemingly insurmountable scenarios are pretty much a staple feature of RE games, Capcom are frickin masters at that

Las Plagas, El Gigante, Midget Napelon, Evil Rasputin, Emperor Palpetine and his throbbing staff, the regerators, attache cash, overshoulder aiming where you can't move, The Spanish villiages, Dr Salavador, the water monster, QTEs in combat, the contant Ashley escort, Giant "Remember Me!"Esq statue comes to life

About the only thing that wasn't creative in RE4 was the lava castle.

Meanwhile the Evil Within has...... erm....... Well it forgets about it's own plot. I guess that's creative
