Practically all FFs are linear aside from say WoR in VI. It's just that some mask it much better than others. XIII didn't even try to hide its linearity.

I'd say the illusion of nonlinearity; an illusion cultivated by clever game design and storytelling, is pretty crucial to the enjoyment of a lot of the players who hate FF13 for not having said linearity.

The more important part is the sense of not being railroaded in one direction only.
4 and 5 were grossly linear, but 4 allows the player to fart around every now and then, and 5 handled itself very well.

All of the Final Fantasy games are linear.

Final Fantasy 6 cannot be considered linear due to the last quarter.

I'm not a big fan of FF 10 but it does linearity significantly better than 13 does.

All I know is that FF13 is an extremely boring game. It would probably be twice as good if it was half as long.
