Is the lawsuit between the original writer and Sean Cunningham still going on? Cause if it is, then the series will still be stuck in limbo.

I really enjoyed the remake.

Still going. Of course, there was time for another film after the 2009 reboot came out. It did big numbers in the opening weekend and plummeted afterwards. It still made a healthy profit, but the key lesson would simply have been to keep the budget low to be on the safe side.
