Trying to find more of these to watch. Any suggestions?

Tonight I watched the Italian Star Wars knockoff Starcrash, it's pretty good fun despite starring David Hasselhoff and it has an inexplicably Texan robot police officer.

Now I'm going to watch Message from Space, a Japanese movie made in 1978 that's seen as Japan's answer to Star Wars. Looks to have villains that could be ripped straight from a Tokusatsu show.

Moonraker. Not a complete knock off but it was basically an attempt to get James Bond to ride that wave.

no, it was riding the IRL wave of NASA and moon landing actually...

Definitely Moonraker. It wasn't even announced in the The Spy Who Loved Me and they randomly released it after Star Wars was popular.

It's still a good movie though tbh. Only at the very end are they in outer space and people ignore all the rest and just focus on that part. It's way better than Diamonds Are Forever, for example.

This is not true. The Moon landing happened a decade earlier. At the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, it says James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only. And it says the same thing at the end of Moonraker.

Came in to say Moonraker.

No, it was Star Wars. The Bond series usually copies off a hit movie or trend.

-The airplane scene from North By Northwest, but with a helicopter in From Russia With Love
-Blacksploitation in Live and Let Die
-Martial arts films in The Man With The Golden Gun
etc.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is debatable. It was based on a script that was intended to be a pilot for a new Star Trek series, but failed to come to light due to several reasons.

The fact that it was greenlit as a theatrical film instead is thought to have been because of Star Wars.

It was more of a 2001 A Space Odyssey rip off. I'm glad they didn't rip off Star Wars because I actually like TMP a whole lot. It's the closest to the series in tone and feel.

Saying Bond movies copy other movies seems unnecessarily aggressive tbh. Bond movies definitely are inspired by other movie genres and are relics of their era while still having their own identity. That's what makes them so great tbh. And really also explains the Craig era Jason Bourne-eque Bond movies.

It was, with the long stretches of just showing the grandeur of space like 2001 was. The film itself was copying 2001, but I'm talking the specifics of it being greenlit by the studio in the first place was considered to be because of SW, which they tried to lean more towards in the 2nd one (and Star Trek for that matter, since the first one didn't feel like Trek either).

Robert Wise wanted to copy Kubrick, but Paramount just wanted their own Star Wars.

It's not aggressive. Bond films have historically borrowed from whatever is popular at the time. The Man With the Golden Gun had an extended martial arts sequence because of the popularity of Enter the Dragon. Live and Let Die tried to capitalize off of the Blaxploitation genre. More recently, Casino Royale and Skyfall borrowed from The Bourne Identity and The Dark Knight respectively.

Moonraker was 100% attempting to capitalize on the success of Star Wars.

Well they do though and I say this as a huge fan. They completely ripped off North by Northwest. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing besides the newer "James Bourne" movies.

I meant that the word copying sounded like a pejorative. But that wasn't his intention so cool.

I'd even say Spectre was pretty influenced by Marvel movies with how it handled its villain.

Fox looked at the successes of Star Wars and Halloween and wondered if the space and horror genres could be combined for additional profits. And they most certainly could. :v

It's not a copy of Star Wars, but it is still capitalizing off of its success.
