It's pretty brutal. On my first playthrough I made it to level 4 (the level after the rotating towers level) and decided to call it quits for the night.
The game honestly isn't too bad if you treat it as a puzzle platformer rather than trying to rush it like Mario.
It's about learning and memorizing the enemy layout and keeping a steady pace to avoid too many respawning enemies. It's the kinda game where you'll die 200 times on a level but once you beat it the will level will click and you'll clear it without dying on future playthroughs.

Except GnG was not designed well

There are very few moments in souls that are straight up unfair for a first playthrough experience. Most of GnG is unfair to a first time player.

I agree it's pretty unfair the first time you run through it. But that's the point. You got to look at it as a trial and error/puzzle platformer. Once you know where everything is it feels satisfying to clear the level.

I am really not sure. Easy by todays standards, probably not.
But then, Par for the coarse difficulty.

Games have gotten easier, I grew up with brutal games, so idk?

Probably slightly easier than Cup Head.

In spring 98, I made it my solitary purpose to beat this game. i was in 8th grade, and was busy running track. I would get home from practice around 6pm. My routine involved playing it as much as possible until around 8pm. This process went on from around mid March until the middle of May. I managed to beat loop 1 once. I never bothered dealing with loop 2 for the true ending.

The part that made it so annoying was the lack of passwords. Getting enough reps at the hard parts (for me at least) took a serious time investment. Not every run got to the snow board or the horrid inside the monster stomach part (not the platform riding section but the rotating section).

I have all the achievements for Dark Souls I-III. So, I've played each of those games a ton. SGG is hard and a somewhat fair comparisson, but with Souls, I almost always feel like I'm fighting the game. SGG, I'm fighting the game and the controls. SGG controls are not bad but they're super restricing and the game is set up to take advantage of the limited movement. At least you have a double jump in it -- I'm looking at you Ghosts and Goblins!

Got to the last level and threw the controller.
The red demons are pieces of shit the game is flat out unfair if you don't have the crossbow that fires diagonally upwards. I praised the game before but now I think I hate it. At least this level.

You have to beat the last stage with a shield to even finish the stage, otherwise it loops.

Knife is the best weapon imo. Upgraded Amor Lazer Knives tear shit up, but I'm familiar with the game. Crossbow maybe the best for a new player idk

I used the knife for majority of the game too. I only had to use the Crossbow for levels 6 and 7 because there's no way I can kill the Red Gargoyle monsters. The only way I can cheese them is by an upgraded Crossbow that fires 3 beams that homes in on enemies.

Every other weapon is absolutely trash. Sickle, Axe, Fire, that stupid laser that fires upward than in weird directions. So bad.

True those weapons suck, they would make for a good challenge run lol

For Red Gargoyles with the knife I would do the double jump attack. Jumping away from it, turning around right after the second jump, and spam laser knives at them. Keep doing that until I catch them swooping down at me. They die fast if you get them like this. I remember that working pretty well.

Attacking like that helps a lot throughout the game actually, but it has it's risks. Jumping into a respawning enemy or any of the many other ways to die in this game lol

The biggest issue with that game is that it just controls like ass. The jumping is so clunky it's reminiscent of Ice Climber. I'd rather just look it up online and play something waaaay better like Super Castlevania IV or Contra III Alien Wars.

Last time I got to the last level of loop 1 and kept dying, threw the controller and quit. Fortunately this is the kinda game where once you clear and learn the level it's easy to kind of breeze through the game.

And I think the jump sucking is what makes the game hard. I reckon about 80% of my deaths are due to me jumping and something shooting a fireball and me having absolutely no control of anything. It's kinda cheap and unfair.

The game lures you in with thinking you just jump around (and then get down), but it's an accident waiting to happen. You should only regular jump and save the double jump for the instance you need to maneuver yourself out of harm's way.

Good luck dude, it is one of my favorite games but I was never a good enough gamer to beat it. I always used the cheat menu and just had fun going through the levels. Luckily the cheat menu also let's you get the true ending.

Last level now. Hopefully I got this, this time.

Also knowing how to make Armor appear makes the game so much easier. From what I gather, popping open the first chest in a level gives you a weapon. The 2nd and 3rd will always give you green and then yellow armor if you don't get hit.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts (GEN) is hard; Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES) is harder, but the original arcade version is the hardest.

[ An indie comic shop had an old Goblins cabinet in back. Its switches were always set to the hardest difficulty level. ]

I beat this game somewhat easily... on the PS2 Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1.

Which has zero slowdown and a "cheat" which lets you change to any weapon you want. So you can go to crossbow or knife if you accidentally pick up a bad weapon.

You can even select the special short range weapon on the 1st loop so it might theoretically be possible to beat the game with no 2nd loop.
