The original game is right there for you to play if you don't like the remake. This remake is a perfect encapsulation of what modern Square Enix is - presentation without direction. It just goes balls to the wall with stupid stuff, so long as it looks cool. I hate the pretty corridors. They started in FFX, and have been an eyesore since then. Man, this game is beautifully frustrating.

I also just kind of want to play the OG game now.

Better IMO. I'm a bit of an older fan of the series and I've always viewed 7 as a strict downgrade from 6.

Not that it's bad, just that 6 is pretty much better in every way.

I felt like the series didn't really find itself again until 9.

7R is better than the original because it has its own identity and the systems themselves are fun and engaging.

It doesn't even let you play as Red XIII or Yuffie, what type of shit is this? I feel like it's not even a remake of the full game.

Oh piss off with that semantic bullshit. World maps allow you to freely explore the area. Final Fantasy 7 allowed you to freely explore any space that you were currently in. The Remake only allowed you to explore what the game wanted you to explore at that specific moment, and absolutely refused to let you deviate from that course. You are pressing forward for most of the game, because it wouldn't let you go in any other direction.

The remake was far more generous with what you were allowed to explore in Midgar than the original. I agree it still could have been done better but it's not like you got an exploration downgrade here when it's actually an upgrade.

Only because they wanted to show off more of Midgar. I love the fully realized versions of Sector 7, Sector 5, and Wall Market. The game got dragged down by them fluffing dungeons for no reason. The sewers were a pain in the ass, and I hated the train graveyard. The path from Sector 5 to Wall Market was irritating as well.

I wasn't the only one that found materia and gil kind of useless, right? The choice of summon materia available was kind of baffling. Ifrit, Shiva, Fat Chocobo, Leviathan, Choco Mog. Just random. The game was throwing poison materia at you in chapter 17. Why? I had six poison materia, two fire, three ice, and something like 5 lightning. Why did I need three chakra materia?

you mean run around an empty field with random battles going off every other step with the available destinations being 1. the place you came from 2. the place you're supposed to go to and 3. the place that is blocked off until after visiting 2?

every single area in that game is a collection of corridors where one path is the correct one and the others lead to either treasure or a means of unlocking the correct path. the only reason you felt that 10 was the starting point of the linearity was because they added a minimap exposing just how limited your movement options were, despite those limitations having been there since the very beginning of the series

i like ff7 as much as the next guy, but outside of the mmos, the mainline games are all mostly structured the same, with 12 and lightning returns comparatively breaking the mold the most

I didn't know you could never go backwards in an RPG. I also wasn't aware there wasn't any side content you could find on your way to your next destination. Too bad about the alternative transportation methods as well. Well, shit. It's all just one giant corridor I guess.

Man people will complain about anything I've realized. Yeah it's not an open world game yet. It was open world when you were in midgar either in the first one. I presume part two will have free roam.

I think people look so much at what things they might not like and just look for reasons as to why something won't be as good as something in the past or something they're comfortable with.

I literally grew up playing 6 and 7. I beat 7 og at least 10 times. It's my favorite game. The remake is everything I wanted. Exceeded my expectations and that's hard to do. And I'm a very cynical person too. When it comes to games or wrestling or anything. I pick things apart. My biggest problem with the game is the lack of 60 fps, no jump button, and the clunky Dodge system. But story wise or pacing wise? I have no problem.

There were always gonna be fans like that. If it wasn't a fucking carbon copy they were gonna complain. It's probably a 3 part game. Not open world yet cause it wasn't open world when you were in midgar.

It definitely has direction and it expanded on Midgar in a fantastic way. Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge are actual characters, Wall Street is Yakuza land, certain enemies that were regular fodder have been given extra love, the character interactions were A+, and Aerith has cemented her role as best girl.

I have no qualms about the characterizations. I loved how everyone was expanded on and given new depth (except Cloud lol). I just found the game from Chapter 15 on to be such a tedious slog that I couldn't be done with it fast enough. I don't even mind how the game ended, even though it's full of Kingdom Hearts bullshit. I want to see more of the world and this story that SE wants to tell using our old favourite set pieces. I just _really_ don't like the pretty corridor aspect of the game direction. it frustrates me when I want to go one way, and the game arbitrarily tells me I can't go that way.

The train graveyard is probably the best case for them. I agree with the pure corridor action going on for Midgar is meh but I really digged with what they did with the flavor of train graveyard chapter.
