Without spoiling anything, either play Nioh 1 or read the story. I would personally recommend you just read it. You will get burned out on Nioh 2 if you rush it after 1.
The biggest reason for me is that skills are locked behind progression so by the time you're like 30-40 hours into it and have all the skills, the fact you gotta get there again to your favourite one is annoying in Nioh 2

I feel like starting the next one is a difficulty spike because you lose all your buffs and debuffs that you eventually rely on

Actually I found it a bit easier since you can just level up magic points early and get the extra heals from magic plus the blue phantoms are pretty useful.

But the difficulty spike is there without some of the basic stuff like ki flux improved or whatever it is when you switch stances, the lack of some basic but really useful moves like ki burst for katana

I really want to get it since I got paid today. Hopefully the Pebble nuke build is back? As well as a bunch of other mistake/endgame builds?

Nope not for a while. Nioh 1's endgame builds were all DLC mostly
though Nioh 2 is pretty good with OPness because we only have NG+1, you can stack defense buffs and heavy armor and just tank things.

Don't think the stone build is in it yet, maybe DLC

Word. I admit I might of also just been worse cause the passion for playing wasn't there like it was for the first.

Nioh 1 has more story.

But it's a garbage story.

It's one those stories where I completely checked out mentally. Usually I make the effort to follow at the very least. But with that game, the presentation couldn't of been more boring.

For Nioh 1? I dunno, maybe 50 hours or so but I did grind a bit in certain levels for gear drops

Definitely a problem for me too, had to take multiple breaks. I'm on another one now. It's a great game but Nioh 2 definitely feels different

Unless you know a lot about Japanese history of the time, the story of the first game is hard to follow. There's all of these names of historical figures but you're probably not going to grasp any of the actual context.

It's not really necessary to know for the bulk of the 2nd game. You just need to know basic notes. The 2nd games story is easier to follow because it's not as reliant on knowing history.
