Half of Russia wants to either eliminate or isolate gay and lesbian people, according to a new study.

Eighteen percent of respondents said to eliminate gays and lesbians, much higher than homeless people, people with HIV, alcoholics, the handicapped, beggars, drug addicts, sex workers, and feminists.

The only people Russians wanted to eliminate more were violent offenders and people with extreme ideologies: terrorists, child molesters, murderers, radicals, and members of cults.

Another 32% said that gays and lesbians should be isolated from society. Another nine percent said that Russia should assist gays and lesbians, although that term wasnt defined, and 32% said that gays and lesbians should be left alone.

According to the Levada Center, 35% of people said that gays and lesbians should be eliminated in 1989. That number dropped to 15% by 1999 and has stayed around 20% ever since.

The percent of Russians wanting to eliminate people living with HIV has also dropped considerably in the same time period, from 14% in 1989 to 2% in 2020.

In general, the attitude towards almost all categories of citizens (from the ones proposed for choice), whose behavior can be perceived as deviant or undesirable has improved since the last survey in 2015, with the exception of members of cults, about whom attitudes, on the contrary, have worsened, the Levada Center said.

While homosexuality is technically legal in Russia, expressions of LGBTQ identity can be punished with up to three years in prison under the countrys ban on propaganda that supports non-traditional sexual relationships.

I was in Moscow in 2014 or 2015, the radio station I was listening to was talking about how the Moscow mayor shot down a request by organizers to hold a pride parade in the city. One of the guests on the show was like, "Yeah I wrote a song about it", and a three minute straight-up ode to hate speech ensued. It was so fucking uncomfortable to hear something like that broadcast on the regular ass radio in the car.

90s Russia was a lot different. Also helps that they were fake lesbian for show only. Thought it was kind of disgusting they performed at the opening of the Sochi Olympics because of that.

Also I disagree. Whether or not they were "Fake Lesbians" means nothing. They were same sex people being presented as a couple, kissing and opposing people treating gays badly.

IIRC "All The Things She Said" was basically a remaster of which was released in 2000... I mean, not "1990s" technically but culturally it was about the same.

Russia is objectively homophobic and bigoted, there's no way to justify any other viewpoint.

Not saying all Russians are, of course that would be equally bigoted, but it's more socially acceptable.

I mean domestic abuse is basically legal over there, so... don't know how you'd justify defending that, either.
