VLR for me, but ZTD definitely had quite a few transcendent moments in spite of its goofines at times.

999 on the merit of being mostly a standalone, and not depending on the resolution of it's story on what turned out to be a disappointing sequel.

I haven't finished ZTD, but it gets props for having the immediate ending where they guess the coin flip correctly and everyone just gets released and leaves, lol. 999 my favorite so far.

Thats a really good point. I voted VLR as my favorite because of how it took things to the next level whereas 999 was more self-contained, but ZTD was a big yikes

does the rest also deal with the supernatural? i was kinda hoping it would be a regular mystery series.

Yes, and they lean far more on it.

That's my reasoning. You can play 999 and reach a satisfying conclussion, but you can't really do that with VLR, although I did enjoy VLR's story more.

This is literally how I feel. VLR is basically a filler arc that's immediately invalidated by being caused by one of ZTD's bad endings, and ZTD just had too much dumb stuff for what was previously a reasonably grounded universe. I'm still not over that alien technology bullshit, that was just dumb and it really didn't need to be included. Or the visual representation of what SHIFTing is like, that just looked goofy in every scene it was in. I still like all three games despite my little rant, it just got a little dumb for my liking after 999, and not the good kind of dumb that intentionally goofy games like Metal Gear Rising or wacky woohoo pizza man era Devil May Cry games went for.

Also the DS version of 999 still has the best use of dual screen functionality with the final puzzle. That stuff gets to me every time, yo.

That's an interesting point, I never really thought about it that way, but if you think about it, that was always gonna be the case unless they wanted the series to have a sad ending.

Despite this, I'm hardly surprised that it's currently clocking zero votes.

It is in my opinion, easily the "third best" of the series. :)

Well now I know that, thanks to hindsight. But I'm pretty sure I remember playing VLR before ZTD came out, so I had to have been really hyped up for where ZTD could have possibly gone from VLR's ending. I think that hype is the main reason I was so much more disappointed with ZTD when I first played it. I haven't touched the trilogy since though, just by nature of being story driven visual novels, so I could just have rose tinted glasses for 999 at this point and not even know it. I really should play this trilogy again at some point so it's all a little fresher in my mind.

The whole point of VLR is to prevent the VLR timeline from happening. It only makes sense that it would be one of ZTD's bad endings.

Furthermore, the "best" timeline would not happen without VLR happening. The whole point was getting Sigma and Phi where they needed to be.

999 for me.

More self-contained, and the "bad endings" were a lot more memorable. It also was focused on finding the "right" path rather than finding darn near every path.

It's fair to say that 999's was not "literal" time travel, so much as it was sending thoughts back in time through the morphogenetic field.

Then again, VLR's was the same thing, so it's still not literal time travel. The closest the series gets to literal time travel is the machine in ZTD and even then, all it did was create a copy in the past.

I enjoyed 999, though it got a bit tedious having to redo slightly different paths.

VLR got overly complex, but i was surprised how much i got into it.

ZTD... I nearly quit the series because of it. The transition from the last one was jarring, the dialogue was off, and for a long time i didn't get what was going on at all. I'm happy i stuck with it though, and it was worth it by the end.

I get that ZTD is not everyones favourite, but it was mine.

Hot take: This series' sci fi/fantasy elements ruin it. 999 was fun in the 1st run because you were actually playing a death game. Then the sci fi elements come in and the series revolve entirely around that.

Not only that, but no one dies by the True Ends.
