Yeah we were watching Season 15 up until a couple of months ago so I'm sure I fell too far behind to catch up until the full season releases somewhere, since CW only offers like the 5 most recent episodes of each running season.

I am really gonna miss it :(

They were actually going to start an all-female spin-off series but it didn't go anywhere.

Yeah, there was a backdoor pilot with the girl hunters taking on a vamp nest or something. Don't remember exact details

I've been watching since halfway through Season 1 was originally airing. Love the show. Will be sad to see it go.

I'm pretty close with my brother and we are both into the show. I'm pretty sure I'll be bawling during the series finale ;_;

Major spoilers for season 14 and 15

God is the big bad and is setting in motion the real apocalypse. Turns out that Earths are basically reality TV shows to him and he didn't like where this one was going. In true Supernatural fashion, this results in 4th wall breaking moments such as Dean and Sam losing "main character status" and causing them to get sick, have to use the bathroom etc all things that TV characters never have to do.

What's the last season about? I stopped watching at like season 10.

So, in Season 13 or maybe it was 14 - Lucifer (an arch angel) and a human woman have a baby, which is a Nephilim - a super powerful being that's more powerful than anything except maybe god (Chuck) himself. Jack (the Nephilim) grows up into like an older teen body really fast but he doesn't know how to control his powers and he's kind of mentally stunted. Like, he's smart and capable of learning, but everyone treats him his age without realizing that he doesn't really know much about the world. And he can't control his powers that well, so the Winchester brothers and Castiel are trying to guide him towards a path of good and kindness while helping keep his powers under control. Eventually he develops his own moral compass and sense of good, which entails kind of being arbitrary about how he solves problems (including "human problems"). So Sam and Dean decide they have to get rid of him. Chuck appears and offers them a gun to kill Jack, but tells the brothers that everything in the universe has to be balanced - whoever kills Jack will also get killed himself. They realize at the end of Season 14 that Chuck is a huge douchebag and Sam shoots the gun at him, wounding Chuck but also wounding himself. In an act of revenge, Chuck basically undoes everything that the brothers have accomplished over the 14 seasons and kills Jack, too.

Season 15 is literally about Sam and Dean trying to get rid of god, or at least lock him away where he can't do any damage. You come to learn that god (Chuck), who is an author, has basically spent his whole life creating worlds just like ours, and then he gets bored of them and ends them with an apocalypse, usually with Sam and Dean finishing each other off in some way. Except the Sam and Dean in this world are hoping to put an end to that cycle.

I think that captures it pretty well?

They are the ones that made the decision.

But I read something a while back that said everyone was committed to giving the show the ending it deserves whenever they are able to do so.

I think unless COVID prevents Hollywood from getting back on track for years or something, they'll finish it.

The CW has said its not a matter of if, but when. The actors are super committed to it and they said they'll be releasing "special treats" along the way, whatever that means. Article was only from 4 days ago

Anybody remember when you were absolutely sure this series was going to get canceled back during Season 1? I thought for sure it would end up like Joss Whedons Firefly.

Anyway, this show should have ended like three or four years back. Once God became a main character they should have just ended it.
I originally felt like it should have ended when Kripke planned at Season 5. Swan Song was a great ending point. However, the series has gradually returned to (almost) its older level of quality as seasons went on. 6-8 though almost made me give up hope.

Yeah, they've pretty much said that the CW has left it in their hands the past few years. This is like CW's biggest show. They've both said that they've thought about continuing it but reached a point where they felt like it was time for it to end. I think it's the Entertainment Weekly article in the OP where they talk about it.

After S1 finale, I was soooo scared it was going to get cancelled. I loved the show even back then and they left it on such a cliffhanger that I was really scared lol

I can still get enjoyment out of S6. S7 was atrocious and probably the worst of the series. S8 starts to try to climb out from where 7 left you.

But I do love the way S5 ended. The first five seasons are for sure the top of the show. There's still a lot of enjoyable moments and episodes post S5.

That explains a lot. I have the box sets of the first five seasons and would readily recommend them. I tried to soldier on after that and made it through six but fell off during seven. Never even considered giving it another chance, although Id rewatch the first five in a heartbeat.
