TL;DR: I think modern 4k TV's have an issue accepting a 480i signal through HDMI because I'm playing my PS2 games on my PS3 via backwards compatibility and they look really blurry & jagged. Playing the same games on an original PS2 via component cables gives a sharp image. I then hooked up the PS3 via component cables and again received a sharp image. Is the upscaler in my PS3 broken when using HDMI or is my TV not able to accept 480i signal over HDMI?

Detailed problem explained: I used to play PS2 games on my Samsung 4k TV via component cables and games looked crisp, and beautiful. I sold the Samsung TV and I purchased an LG OLED 4k TV, however this LG TV only comes with 4x HDMI ports and does not have a component jack. My solution? I purchased an original launch model (CECHA01) PS3 because it supposedly is the best graphical way to play PS2 games. It has an internal upscaler that renders all PS1 & PS2 games in 1080p with a built in AA feature called "smoothing". This PS3 is rare, but it has an HDMI port so I was sold.

Many thousands of dollars later I am disappointed because playing the PS2 games through the PS3 look terrible, jagged, and soft. I have all smoothing features and upscaler features enabled to 1080p. I followed every online guide on settings, as well as purchasing a high speed HDMI cable. Trust me, this is set up properly. The games literally look blurry, way worse than they looked on the PS2 via component. I then went back to my old Samsung TV (that I sold to my relative) and I hooked up the PS3 via HDMI. Same result as LG TV! The image was horrible! I pulled out all the stops to solve this. I hooked up my original PS2 to the Samsung via component and the image was sharp. I then hooked up the PS3 via component and VIOLA, the image was sharp and beautiful. Why does the HDMI produce a horrible image?

Does anyone here have a backwards compatible PS3 that has tested this themselves? I do not believe the upscaler is broken because it upscales beautifully over component. I do not believe the HDMI port on the PS3 is broken because it plays PS3 games in crisp 1080p. The only catalyst left? Modern TV's must not be coded to take a 480i signal over HDMI. I wish I had a 10 year old TV with HDMI so I can test this, it really bothers me because I cannot play PS2 games on my LG OLED TV because there is no component input jack..

Bump. This is eating me away that no one has an answer. Why do PS2 games look blurry when playing via HDMI on my PS3? But they look sharp when playing via Component.

I have a backwards compatible PS3 and a PS2, both of which have component. My PS2 games look fine on HDMI from the PS3, but this is an HD monitor, not 4k.
