I'm no music theory guru by any means but this topic fascinates me so I thought I'd share.

Seems like people largely think there are just the major scale and the minor scale, when those are just broad categories for a lot of different moods.

In this first post, we're just gonna look at modes of the major scale. These are the most common in Western music anyway.

Ionian

The feel good scale.

Dorian

Nice and mellow, sad but with an optimism to it.

Phrygian

Dark, extremely sad, creepy, and vaguely exotic. It's more common to borrow a few bars or even just a few notes from this scale because it's so dark and diffucult to write in.

Lydian

Bright, floaty, dreamy, otherworldly, and a favorite for movie score climaxes.

Mixolydian

Happy but with a little bit of edge. A bit of a groovy/funky feel.

Aeolian

Your standard sad or rock feel.

Locrian

We don't talk about locrian. Nobody likes locrian. Don't ask too many questions about locrian.

Locrian has a diminished tonic triad, meaning the Western flow of functiomal harmony, which relies on patterns of tension and release, don't apply. It's pretty much antithetical to the concept of music theory. Sometimes you may find it borrowed for a chord or two but a whole song is more or less unheard of.
