I don't remember Michael Jackson dying either I just remember that people were making jokes about it not long after.

That's like saying everybody is gonna remember when Bill Cosby died, Michael Jackson was popular when I was old enough to be a target of his but I grew up thinking Michael Jackson was a fucking nutball and it turns out I was right

If anything, X-ers have the Clinton scandal, L.A. Riots, Waco, Oklahoma City Bombing, O.J. Trial, Columbine, and anything else that happened in the 90s, mostly.

Even though, I'm a 30-year-old Millennial, I actually remember all of those events though not as explicitly or as vividly as 9/11.

Im a millennial and was a couple weeks away from starting college when 9-11 happened, so I think millennials can claim that as their own.

although obviously Im on the older end.

I remember that Michael Jackson died but it wasnt like a big deal where the world stopped or anything.

I think Pew Research has the cutoff at like 23

The Pew Research Center was attention whoring when they came out with that. No one gives a shit about Pew when it's not an election year so they came out with what they say is the years for the Millenial generation....20 years after it already ended. Pew just wanted attention and to be mentioned.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines it as 1982-2000. This is also the years the vast majority of generational researchers have used as well. This means Millenials are 19/20 to 37/38. The term was created for those coming of age at the turn of the millennium. This would be for those in their 30s. Yet the news media, paragons of stupidity that they are, portray the Millenials as only being in their 20s and apparently the 30 somethings are just lost in the void between generations.

The way to determine a millenial:

If you distinctly have a memory of 9/11 happening, but you hadn't yet graduated highschool, then you're a millennial.

So if you were a little kid up to a high school senior in the year 2001, you're a millennial.

How is "coming of age" defined?

Generally your formative years. Being a teenager essentially when you are coming into your own and being more aware of the world.

I know people will then say well that won't apply to those born in the 90s, but that's just how long generations go. Sometimes the oldest or youngest don't feel like they belong depending on what happens during certain age ranges of the generation. The alternative is defining a "generation" as only 5-10 years and even then you can still have the same problem.

I was born in 1993 so I would be considered a millennial, though a younger one. 9/11 was a huge deal for both my generation as well as generation X, so that could go for both generations honestly.

I think Obama being elected was also kinda a big deal at the time. A black liberal president in 2008? That was something. I actually lived in Indiana at the time so I saw Indiana become a blue state for the first time since 1964.

I always thought 9/11 was ours, I was in middle school so I at least remember it and I think most people my age remember it pretty well.

Only the oldest millenials, the ones born in the early 80's.

I was in basic training at Fort Knox when it happened.

The rest would probably be to young for it to ha e that much of an impact if they werent actually directly impacted (in the general area.) Like Pepcon.

Speaking of Pepcon.

Fucking Pepcon. A 7 explosion disaster at a rocket fuel plant that the largest of which holds the record for largest artificial non nuclear explosion, 100 times more yield than the MOAB, and 1/10th the yield of the little boy atomic bomb.

That shit I will NEVER forget.

I think defining a millennial has as much to do about the time someone was born with what the world was like during their lives. It's a stretch to call someone born in '80 - '81 a classic millennial. And saying a 40-year-old is a millennial is laughable. A 40-year-old grew up in a totally different world than a 26-year-old. Smartphones and social media have a lot to do with that.

youre making up your own definition. stop that.

because a 40 year old didnt get to grow up with smartphones it disqualifies him from being part of a generation he was born into? lol ok. youre thinking one dimensionally. it has more to do with the social and political climates that define a generation. a 40 yo and a 26 yo grew up in the exact same climate.

it doesnt. total deaths havent even reached 200k whereas 911 shook the foundation of this country and put in motion some devastating policies that crippled the economy. not to mention the total deaths in the iraq and afghan war (in direct response to 911) are very comparable to this virus. over a 100k civilians died, a few thousand more on the us side

now i remember 911 well it was far more fear inducing than covid

Are you kidding me?
This pandemic is much worse that 9-11. Not saying 9-11 wasn't bad (it was indeed bad), but this pandemic is much, MUCH worse.
The Global Coronavirus death toll is currently at slightly over 150,000.... and that number is going to be going way, way up. We are expected to go over 200,000 by the beginning of next month.... if not MUCH sooner.
Also, there are lockdowns all over the world in multiple countries causing havoc upon econonies all over the globe. 9-11 didn't cripple the economy that bad in comparison to what the Coronavirus is doing right now and what it has potential to do if this pandemic gets worse (and there is a high chance it will get worse).
Also, in terms of overall fear, far more people are scared of this pandemic.
