David Prowse is credited as Darth Vader, but no mention at all of JEJ. Weird.

James Earl Jones supplied the voice of Darth Vader, but specifically requested that he not be credited. At the time, the reason he cited was that he felt he had not done enough work to get the billing, but he later admitted that he didn't want his name associated with the film because he was still an up-and-coming actor, and didn't want to be typecast. Jones does receive billing in the subsequent sequels and the 1997 "Special Edition".

Yeah people forget that everyone involved in making Star Wars thought it was Shlock.

None of them expected it to take off the way it did

It's kinda funny. He did the smallest amount of work but had the biggest impact.

Reminds me of Sean Connery turning down playing Gandalf in Lord of the Rings to do The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, leading to him ending his acting career.

This was only half of it iirc. The reason he did LoEG was because he had previously turned down the role of Morpheus in the Matrix, thinking the whole movie was stupid and incomprehensible, only for that movie to go on to be a smash hit.

So his motivation for choosing League was that, hey, he also thought that movie was stupid and incomprehensible, so it would probably be better for his career to do that one.

Then it bombed and hes like fuck it all >_>

This is a half truth

For starters the reality that it was Theoden who was shot down, not Gandalf. It was also The Architect he shot down, not Morpheus.

And for two, he didn't turn LOTR down to do The League. He turned them down because he just had a child and didn't want to be away for the best part of the first year of his child's life, leaving the mother alone. So he chose his projects more carefully at the time.

Also he turned down the Matrix and went for the League under advice from his agent who said "It's better to take the lead in a major Hollywood movie that will pay you more than take a small side character."

Now the agent was wrong, but it wasn't like Sean was judging the Matrix as a shitty movie franchise.

He just didn't feel passionate about any of the 3 projects and one was a lead role.

It's an interesting enough story without the clickbait.

Those both make a hundred times more sense.

Also, turning down the Architect might have been a good move. I liked Reloaded and all but man does everyone else hate it.

See I was gonna say thank God that Sean Connery didnt portray Gandalf or Morpheus, but he would have been fine as Thoden and/or The Architect.

Remember when Sebastian Shaw was edited out as "Anakin's ghost" at the end of Jedi and replaced by Hayden Christensen. That was like a big middle finger to Shaw imo

It also doesnt make sense imo. The last time he was Anakin was when he was old, when he saved Luke. He was Anakin when he died.

iirc it had something to do with connecting the prequel trilogy to eps 4, 5 and 6, like adding more junk such as planets at the very end we hadn't seen at all since ep. 2 or 3.

I sincerely wish they would re-release the original theatrical versions, but I read somewhere that the original negatives are so badly damaged it's impossible to do.

It's one of those goofy movies that I kind of liked as a teen while thinking "this could have been a lot better"

Haven't rewatched it in years. I've also started to notice Alan Moore really likes taking the works of other people and going "you know what would be cool, if all these characters met up"

I'll admit that's what appealed to me too. Mcu and avengers didn't even exist back then, not even the thought of such a concept taking off

Where are you getting this? Do you have a source? It was definitely Gandalf, every source I can find agrees.

https://www.looper.com/42373/actors-refused-roles-lord-rings/

I'm sure there were multiple reasons he turned down LotR, but in his own words after the fact:

"I read the book," Connery said (via The Scotsman). "I read the script, I saw the movie. I still don't understand it. Ian McKellen, I believe, is marvelous in it."

And then you have Ian McKellen backing it up:

The films would have been very different if it had been Sean Connery; Gandalf would have come from Scotland for a start! And, of course, there were a number of actors, including Richard Harris, who were hoping to play Gandalf. Auditions took place, I know.

I can't speak to the circumstances with The Matrix, though.
