I'm for opening areas that are safe to open provided they have the tests needed to protect the people. That said between these two options, it would be continuing to quarantine. An increase in deaths is going to fuck with the economy as well, so do that will be getting fucked on both ends.

Would it, though? Speaking strictly economically, the longer the economy is shut down, the harder it's going to be to get going again. A lot of people have already lost their jobs. It's going to keep getting worse.

True, but I worry about people who were healthy, employed, and had a whole life ahead of them potentially dying from getting evicted, sleeping outside during fall/winter, being unable to find work, and unable to afford food, and then perhaps getting the coronavirus while weakened.

You pose this like this is the choice, but the choice is actually "quarantine and economic depression" and "mass deaths and economic depression". Just ask Sweden, which made the terrible decision to pursue a "herd immunity" strategy.

Unless we stop share buybacks by CEOs, the economy is heading for a Great Depression regardless.

I want to keep what we have in place at least through May. I don't want everything to be undone. Eventually we will have to tell people that you can go out, but those high risk groups need to avoid certain places.

Continue quarantine and use the opportunity to change the fundamental way some portions of the economy work so that we can come back with an economy better suited to serve the worker over the CEO.

Both.
We've discovered that anything can be delivered, office work can be done from home, education can be done at home, and even factory and agriculture workers really can stay six feet apart when the work is actually essential, and loafing on the couch watching netflix is perfectly adequate family entertainment.

The markets are adapting to all these things, but they'll all be quickly be forgotten until the next ohshit disater.

As I posted in a now deleted topic, most experts aren't even sure how to do this. Some are thinking to open up sooner so that the next major spike is in the summer months and not the winter months.

I think we should open up gradually AFTER (*edit) the next four weeks but still do everything possible to protect those most vulnerable.

Maybe I'm selfish here but quarantine hasn't been adverse for me besides the mental health issues of being stuck indoors.
