Kerala (South India) is the most well off state in India
Guangdong (South China) is the most well off province in China
Southern Canada is the populated and richest but that's prolly cause they benefit from the proximity of the U.S. throwing spare change at them
South Brazil is richer overall than North Brazil but they re in the Southern hemisphere so you probably meant why are areas closer to the equator poorer.

and what's the correlation between the two? Brazil is hot as fuck no matter what, and england is cold as fuck no matter what. The weather theory seems to hold up?

I can't speak for other countries, but in the United States... Have you heard of Sherman's March to the Sea?

During the Civil War, a Union General named William Sherman marched with his troops from Atlanta, GA to Savannah, GA as they literally destroyed everything in their path. We're talking houses, businesses, roads, you name it. Scorched earth.

He wasn't the only one doing this kind of thing either. Large parts of the South had their infrastructure destroyed during the Civil War. The whole region was basically set back like a hundred years and still hasn't recovered to this day. Sure, you have some big, modern cities in the South, but there are still plenty of rural areas without indoor plumbing and an average education level around the sixth grade.
