no one knows how to do them right, and then people who do use it just post stuff online or put videos online. theres so much potential left out.

I mean, depends on the class and teacher. Bad generalization

I liked this language class I just had last week.

We just talked. And the instructor had prompt questions and showed us news articles and short videos to give us context and spur discussion but they didn't dominate or slow down the flow of the class. Overall a really smart and simple approach to using the technology.

Do you mean online school on general? I teach online and I have received great feedback from students. But you actually need to be trained to teach online. You can't self-teach that any more than you can self-teach to be a good in-class teacher.

im curious how you do it

i once had to TA for a teacher who was going to do an online class. she was so excited about it

but all she did was post articles on a forum and asked everyone to comment

so all people did was put the same basic response to the article (it was obvious some people just looked at others and copied theirs).

there was no discussion. no debates, no nothing. why did this need to be online?

I teach statistics and research classes. For my statistics class, I had my students work in virtual groups applying each statistics lesson to the democratic primary (back when we had over 10 candidates). So after a short live virtual lecture, they looked up polls, calculated means and standard deviation, looked up margins of error and sampling techniques, etc. Then they would make predictions on who they thought would win and had to justify it with the polls they evaluated to be the most accurate based on sound statistical concepts.

We would also do weekly online polls where the class would answer silly questions like favorite color and favorite pizza toppings and we would use the data to find interesting correlations between class demographics and their preferences.

In addition, I would show videos from movies and TV shows that involved statistics and discussed them (such as Numb3rs and Big Bang Theory). This in addition to traditional assignment and concept quizzes.

For my research class, I would have a guest speaker each week to talk about their research and give advice to the class. This week I had an infection preventionist talk about her research on COVID 19 which the class found very interesting. Meanwhile, they are all working on individual research topics that they update us on in discussion board posts weekly and they receive detailed feedback from me and their classmates.

The strategy to online teaching is to keep every topic relatable to the class so they are engaged. Also having to switch up the teaching style very often, as lectures and readings can get boring fast.
