I just one one for web browsing right now. But I want it to have the ability to be upgraded to the best PC ever, if I wanted to.

PCs are like legos you can mix and match anything with ease and no problems.

you might be able to upgrade the one you already have. can you find out what model of cpu is in there? that'll answer a lot of questions about what parts are compatible.

also, if you buy pre-built and upgrade in the future, then the first thing you should get is a new PSU. the power supplies in pre-built machines are usually good enough for the components the manufacturer chooses and nothing more.

I'm confident that I can't because I do not own one xD

The reason im making this topic is because when I was a teen I bought an eMachines (it was cheap) and I was under the assumption that any desktop can be upgraded to "the best."

Apparently that wasn't the case. Since then I've been using an old laptop (but mostly my phone) and it gave out. I want to be able to game on my PC but laaaaater. Right now I only want it for smooth browsing.

If you were to build it yourself you could get a good cpu with a single stick of decent ram and a low budget graphics card.

I would love to but I've never done it. I see people say that it's easy but would it really be easy? I've only set up things like consoles before lmao.

I understand peripherals but I have never worked on a pc (on the inside) physically. Like can you chip or break a stick of ram by inserting it the wrong way? Are things pretty clear for a first timer? I'm afraid of having a bunch of parts that I have no idea wtf to do with.

i wouldn't do this. you'll regret it. youll spend way too much money on a prebuilt piece of junk, then throw in some parts later and find out that you're being dragged down by your motherboard, or your ram specs, or your power supply. then you gotta replace those. but then you gotta find parts that match your already existing CPU and GPU and oops nothing fits properly. its just going to be a mess.

just buy a chrome book if you wanna browse the internet. when you've saved up enough money to built or buy a good pre-built machine from a place like Origin PC or Doghouse, whatever, then do that. you'll save tons of money down the road and a lot of headaches.

source: i tried to do this in 2009 and it was a huge mistake.

Given your goal, the most important thing for you to invest in is a really good motherboard. Your ability to upgrade a computer with new parts is almost entirely dependent on how old your motherboard is.

What if I drop 800 dollars on a desktop? I'll still run into that problem?

this is probably the best course of action imo. a basic, no-frills build will be much cheaper than a pre-built and better in the long run.

at that rate if you build yourself, you can get a pretty decent mid-tier gaming desktop. my lower mid-tier gaming laptop was like $900

look at some builds on pcpartpicker.com and go from there :)
even in that price range, pre-builts can easily cut corners on core components.

Since I'm a console gamer what is mid-tier gaming on PC? PS5-level games at lowest settings or PS4 level games at low or medium settings? Skyrim with mods at least? Lmao

Since we are almost at the turn of a generation I get confused. Idk when PC gets its "next Gen." Does PC even have generations? It's always pushing the bar constantly right.

Good news: we're getting new consoles this year so next year (or even this year technically) you could get a decent GPU to last you 4-5 years easily

You'll want a decent motherboard, CPU and power supply. Just get an 8GB ram stick and a 256gb ssd and away you go.

Two things that are damaged most commonly are: the cpu socket when putting it in and the pins on the motherboard when putting in things like the wire from the case to the motherboard since they are very easily damaged.
I would still say build it yourself or get someone to do it for like $50, but pick the parts out yourself.

Any idea how much you wanna spend?

I'm willing to spend 800 easily. But I would only spend 900 if it made sense to throw another hundred.

So I'm lazy:
https://www.logicalincrements.com/
Go down to the very good tier

Here's how it is with Red Dead Redemption 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gidDrHUYWQ

So basically that build will get you looking nicer than what you'd get on consoles easily, probably hitting mid to high settings, better in some games, compared to the PS5 most likely.

Just please be careful with the case, like literally measure out where you'll have it and what not because cases can be huge. Also depending on how hot the room is, you can get by with a pretty small case if that's a factor

Just something along those lines

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fhwcFG

I got help from the people here and just got my parts. Assembly is so easy. It looks intermediating but it's really not. I would rather get the Readon 5700 XT graphics card or the 2060s over the 1660 Ti that I posted here, but since you just want to upgrade later then it's the cheapest option.

Honestly you could even do without the video card if you just want to browse. I would just get the Ryzen 7 or 9 if I went that route.
