I hate them. All they do is stress me out and make me use guides to make sure I am using the character right.

I've never really been a huge fan. It really limits play types and forces players to put skill points towards perks they may not really even want just to have access to perks they have been forced to work towards.

Job class > skill tree > neither

What I don't like are skill trees that you can 100% if you level up enough. I demand choice and finite resources!

What matters is if the skills actually make a difference. There's too many games where picking paths have pretty much no impact.

like all things, it depends on how they're implemented, how easy they are to reset if at all, and how meaningful the differences of branches on them are

Agree. Far too often they are shoe-horned into FPS or adventure games.

Again, I feel like it limits play style.

It's a little irritating when a character NEEDS certain skills no matter what.

Skill Trees are honestly pointless.
There's always a meta set which recommends you the ideal traits or perks over the trivial ones.

This. A bunch of AAA games (cough Ubisoft) are bunching up in the middle of the scale between normal action games and RPG's so they look like they have more meat. They think having leveled loot and a skill tree that just gives you a point to spend between a 6% increase in ammo inventory or a new stealth kill animation makes a game an RPG. We need more games that use items and weapons as progression rather than half assed perk points. Metro Exodus does a great job with item progression.

Basically all Hellborn Krieg builds don't use the action skill at all, and those builds are still viable in OP10. And the types of maps/ endless hellborn builds are bad against are also a problem for RtB builds.

Salvador is probably the most " locked in" in terms of what skills you want in BL2. And maybe Gaige, but half her abilities are useless when compared to Anarchy.

I'm fine with skill trees as long as they don't hide things that should be given naturally behind them. Nothing else than if you level up the wrong skills to find out later that you could have unlocked a super dodge that includes invincible frames way earlier. Especially common as an issue in those "pick from 3 skills to level up" games (physical, magical, speed).

Show players the end-node [final] builds at the very beginning, make them targetable, and highlight only/all of the branches that help achieve that build.

Most skill trees are not like that, though.
