Employees at her store were not given proper safety supplies. She chose to keep working so she could help others. here's the kicker...

I got this paycheck yesterday for twenty dollars," Shepherd said through tears. "Twenty dollars and sixty four cents. My baby's gone because of $20.64. You know what using the proper PPE could've done for my baby?"

$20...."essential workers". Stop denying these people a living wage.

There are a lot of reasons to have problems with our current system but this is just a pure appeal to emotion apparently based on not understanding how pay periods work.

It's a shame that this is how essential workers are "valued". Can't afford to invest in their safety, can't afford to invest in giving them a living wage, but golly gee thanks you for risking your life for us!

I hope the store goes bankrupt, and the people responsible see some concequences.

Are they really considered essential in anything other than name? Whenever people talk about donating PPE, hand sanitizer gloves, pizza etc. It to the nurses/doctors no one gives a fuck about doing that donation stuff to grocery store workers.

so far from the point you may as well be on the moon
The TC specifically highlighted that one point and then repeated the $20 number again. This topic is pure appeal to emotion, again, based on not understanding how pay periods work.

Like I said, there are a lot of reasons to dislike the current system and there are a lot of ways to highlight that low wage jobs need to be living wage jobs. This ain't it.

Please explain how a pay period would change the fact that $20 is less than an essential worker should be making for even a 3 hour shift right now.
Right now? Are you another person who's only interested in low wage workers having better wages because of the pandemic, not because you believed that they deserve a living wage a few months ago?

Whenever the topic of raising wages comes up the typical response is "WHAT YOU WANT 15 for FLIPPING BURGERS!?"....Its not only fast food that makes minimum wage, but regardless, this pandemic has shown they're value to us is more than just a "burger flipper"...Even if she only worked 3 hours that week, a $20 check and a lack of care from management with regard to her safety isn't ok no matter how you try to frame it. This isn't an "appeal to emotion", its reality.

The people working these jobs have ALWAYS deserved better conditions and more pay, but for decades people fought to prevent that...now we're seeing the reality of it and its too late to make those changes now. Don't ignore stories like this. Learn from it and start now to make things better for the next time.

And look at how quickly you changed your narrative. You dont actually have anything to say, you just want to argue.
You didn't even address my point that this topic and running with the "she died for $20" narrative is a pure appeal to emotion because it happened to be such a low number. If her last check had been for two pay periods minus a few hours for a day she left early, do you think that there would be any focus on that whatsoever? Do you think you would see anything about how "she died for $678?" No, it would just be about the overarching fact that low wage workers are being put in a vulnerable position.

Funny. Some American companies are so cruel. Here in Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC, Chinese Supermarkets have their cashiers fully decked out in PPE gear, as well as a big plastic see through wall for pre-cautions. Shame.

I just want to point out when people are using appeals to emotion rather than a rational basis for their arguments. And apparently you only think that low wage workers should make more money "right now" while there is a pandemic going on, but you're not going to want to actually address that either I'm sure.

Ah yes, the federal government fucking up somehow makes this better

It means that the company wasn't neglecting their employees' health as Vipa suggests. You can't just trash a company and say they did nothing for their employees if it wasn't recommended at the time to do so.

Ah yes, if everyone fucks up then no one is to blame!

Sometimes there isn't someone to blame. Does there always have to be someone to blame? It certainly shouldn't be the grocery store. Maybe be mad at the CDC for not recommending masks? I don't see how it's productive to blame the store, though.

That also could have been after taxes and 401k contributions, too. We don't know her tax situation or how much money was being withheld from her check.

And sometimes you dont have to defend anyone. You can point out issues and fix them! In order to do that we first need people to see how fucked up the system you defend is. Hence, shining light on these stories and pointing out the issues is a good thing.

You dont see how we can blame the organization that lied about the effectiveness of masks in reducing the spread of infection or the place of employment that refused to disclose that an employee was sick after not providing adequate protective gear?

I said that you could blame the CDC. It would be more appropriate than blaming the store that was following CDC recommendations. And I didn't see in the article where they didn't disclosure an employee was sick.
