If so, is it worth double dipping?

I liked Strange Journey well enough, and Redux is on sale for $20 right now, but I'm not really sure if it adds enough new stuff to be worth going back to.

Redux has new content, but it's easier and the new art is terrible. I regret double dipping though I did it to get a FF14 mount code a bit.

I honestly really didn't like Strange Journey Redux. Never played the original, I just found getting around to be immensely frustrating and recruiting demons felt way more hit-or-miss than even Nocturne, due to how influential alignment is.

I did. I love SJ and as far as double dipping goes, it's worth it if you love the game and a new ending route with new demons and dungeons sounds good to you. That said the new dungeon is kind of a slog.

Hrm, the impression that I'm getting is that the new content isn't super great. If so, I may just hold off and rebeat the original some time.

I liked it well enough, but I still have it somewhere, so if the added stuff is mediocre (which is what it seems like from the responses here?), I'm not really sure if it's worth buying it a second time.

I mean I am such a fan I have the giant 20th anniversary collector's edition with the soundtrack CDs. If you aren't super amped to replay it this isn't going to change enough to make it worth it.

I'd be down to replay it for sure, but it's more a matter of "Replay the original some time" vs. "Buying Redux to go in again".

I'm kind of getting the sense that the new content for Redux isn't amazing, though? For just the new stuff, what I'm seeing is that it's easier, the art is worse, and the new dungeon is a slog, so it kind of sounds like I might be better off rebeating the original, at least from the impressions I've seen thus far.

I am not sure what they mean by easier per se, but on art I disagree:

Watch and compare for yourself. As I said the new dungeon is a slog, but if you're looking for difficulty it's the hardest route through the game.

I double dipped and it's pretty awesome

Then again it's my favorite game in the series so maybe I'm a little biased

SMTIV is my favorite, but I love SJ. It was nice to go back to a dungeon crawler and more traditional alignment after III went in such a different direction.

It seems like there are some positive opinions about the new content, at least.

I'll have to think on it, I guess. The sale lasts for a few days, so I have a bit of time to consider it.

Most fans prefer 4 over Apocalypse, but I can see arguments for liking Apocalypse more. It's a different take on a mainline SMT game.

I've never heard anyone say they prefer 4 to Apocalypse. The general consensus has always been that Apocalypse was an improvement in every way.

it's pretty basic and easy with tons of ways to break the game, like every other smt

3ds version adds a bad optional dungeon which breaks level scaling and some of the new commander skills and apps make the game easier, but since the only "hard" fights the original had were only hard because of really dumb mechanics (1/4 chance to game over every time ma was casted) it doesn't really matter and the remake is overall cleaner, faster, and more fluid

Check out the Megaten subreddit. Apocalypse is very divisive.

SMT1 and payalysis, SMT2 and multi-hitting swords, SMTif and... Actually SNTif is just brutal and everything sucks pretty bad, but it's not hard per se, just really annoying. Every SMT from 3 and on it's all about weakness and resistance abuse.

"hit weakness and buff/debuff turn 1" overcentralizes the series and i don"t understand the difficulty perception the series has when it's so basic to the point that every fight plays the same and demons mostly play the same

nocturne has extremely overpowered buffs and debuffs, making things deal less than a quarter of their regular damage with hitrates below 15% so you don't need exploits, but even after the nerfs to buffs they still feel really strong in 4

there are multiple fight in strange journey where after turn 1 i literally held down a and won because weakness exploits are so overly rewarding in these games and mitigating damage and boosting evasion are two really easy ways to never die
the series feels like a test in resistance tables than a test of smarts dince often times all that changes between fights is whether or not you use ice or volt

i like the series as easy comfort food but it isn't very intelligently designed and many parts of the battle swing way too hard in the player's favor for real challenge beyond some poorly designed superbosses or some of the more rng-focused fights, like how ouroboros is a joke but there is the nonzero percent chance of being petrified amd losing

"hit weakness and buff/debuff turn 1"

Hit weakness is basically useless in 1, 2, and if. Buff and debuff have some use but it was 3 that started the trend you're referencing here. Early Persona and other early spinoffs like Devil Summoner also had little emphasis on the weaknesses aspect.

redux was great. i think the new character added a lot to the story. it's no nocturne, but it's more nocturne than smt4 at least. the game was a comfortable difficulty for a while (on expert or whatever the highest you can pick) but the final few bosses were no joke and it was really rewarding.
