Usually no. I sometimes find claw grip easier to play Mercy on Overwatch but otherwise never. Doesn't it give you carpel tunnel?

What in the hell is that, and how, let alone why would anyone play that way, it just looks uncomfortable.

Lets you move your camera while still having access to your face buttons. That is the purpose of it.

I occasionally use it for 3D platformers where camera movement is very important. Just sorta natutally happens without me thinking about it; I have my thumb on the stick and I need to jump, so I use my index finger because it's convenient.

Remind me why monster hunter would require such an unholy act? I still play generations on 3ds and I can't say I've ever done it.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

Some weird people to actually play this way but if it works and your hand does not get fucked up have at it.

Monster Hunter on the PSP controlled your camera with the D-PAD while you moved with the analog stick. Both were on the same side of the PSP so if you only used your thumb you sacrificed movement or looking around for the other. Plus I think sprint was L-button? You'd claw with your left hand to meet the needs of doing all three things at the same time.

In MHW it helps because its always safe to keep eyes on the monster and since most of your attacks come from face buttons often you are trying to accomplish tasks at the same time so using your index finger for face buttons while turning your view with your thumb is pretty helpful.

Because Sony's PSP, for whatever stupid fucking reason, only had an analog stick on one side, so you needed to if you wanted to move the camera and the player at the same time.

I started clawing back in the Halo 2 days and have been doing it ever since. It was advantageous back then. No real point nowadays but I'm just used to it.

Different grips facilitate different actions. Plenty of speedrunners and competitive gamers claw grip for certain actions.
Check out the NES Tetris world record: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bNpORK-MTo4
Far fewer buttons than a modern controller, but still needs a specific grip for certain actions.
