Final dungeon is hella rough assuming this is the 3D version. VI is a treat, though.

Why not play V next?

VI is my favorite of the 3, but I feel like it's nice to see the progression from game to game

I only played V once, probably 15+ years ago. I should replay it tbh

I dunno, I figured I'd just play the critically acclaimed games. I'm working my way up to FFVII so I can then play the remake.

You should play V then, it's very underplayed but those that have played it enjoy it

Actually just reading into the DS version it sounds very interesting, maybe I will give it a shot. One thing that kinda annoyed my about IV was the constant changing party, it never felt like I was actually leveling people for a good reason because I could just lose them later on. Does that kind of go away in the FF series?

From what I understand it's because the real FF 2 and 3 were never released in the US so they named the SNES versions of IV and VI that. It's confusing as fuck when actually trying to look for walkthroughs or tips for the games.

V is pretty skippable.

I do love Gilgamesh and several of the bosses were pretty creative, but the famous job system isn't really all that special (was good but not enough to carry the game) and the story is among the worst in the series. Plus awful villain and WTF final boss.

But hey, if you wanna give it a go, it's not like it's a bad game.

Agree with all of this. The story is lame and practically the entire game is built around constantly grinding for the job system, which is tedious as hell

Yeah. Not sure how much of a spoiler this is, but all FF more recent than 7 (original) do not make you waste time grinding characters that will be eventually removed from your party. 7 remake does not have that problem and it's always worth grinding there.

I disagree, it's more of an "expert" FF game. He should play the acclaimed ones first, then go back to 5 when he has more experience. He's doing it right. Not disagreeing that it's great (probably my favorite overall), but games like 6 and 7 and even 9 were much more casual and 5 will be easier and make more sense with more experience/knowledge of the series imo.

6 has a very unique system in which your goal should be to finish the first half of the game with as low a level as possible. Your level up stats are determined by your equipped magicite and the magicite you find in the second half of the game completely destroys the first half stuff in stats.

However, you can rest easy knowing the temporary characters you get in 6 don't actually stay for very long.

It's also not even bad in FF7, because most of your abilities are tied to your materia, which is interchangeable and not tied to any character. No reason to fear grinding in that game.

Eh...

You can get the materia back but the time you spent learning great gospel is forever wasted.

I don't remember for sure, but I don't remember there being any problem with wait. ATB could mess you up while you're fiddling in menus as a new player

Wait. It just pauses the ATB while you're in menus.

Yeah it's about 24 hours to beat for first timers if you're getting everything optional (a few hidden chests in the final dungeon, all summons, etc.) that's about right. Actually, in game timer is not actually right, but I'm too lazy to type an essay to explain the differences between it and real time for FFIV even though I know the specifics of this game.

Besides turn based ones where you have a set turn limit almost always named ahead of time (fire emblem), I'm pretty sure that's right.

If you can't deal a minimum amount of damage in a given interval of time the fight is unwinnable (or much harder)

Demon wall was in ampador keep in 2.0 and a few other variants have appeared. And plague like mechanics exist, lord knows how much people still die to doom (3 second) mechanics in the 24 man raids.
