I like how SE beefed up just how much Shinra's controlling the situation from the get-go. You're not slick or suave, nor are you escaping their eyes. They allow you to do what you're going to do, hedging on it not being powerful enough to do any real damage. They cause the damage themselves, just so they can blame you for it. It will be interesting to hear his reasoning why, because that's an awful lot of damage to attribute to the guys who might as well have just sneezed on the mako reactor, for all the damage the bomb did.

It's also important to separate FFVII from its remake, because it's telling two different stories. Cloud is having hallucinations way earlier than in the OG game.

So, er. Is Joe Swanson voicing one of the guards in Sector 7 Slums? Sounds an awful lot like him.

I'm enjoying how they've expanded on the little things so far. Take Johnny, for instance. In the OG, he's just leaving on a personal quest for discovery. I mean, noble, right? Other than a few token appearances, you never see him again. Here, they make him out to be a hot-headed blabbermouth. They give him an ignoble MO, but still achieve the same result - sending him on his way.

I started playing it last night, and after the first chapter, it said the game was only 45% installed, and it would take 12+ hours to finish installing the rest.

Honestly, play both. They both tell a similar story, but this feels like it will play out like a parallel universe more than a faithful 1:1 retelling of the story. I'd play the original first, so you have a better understanding of the nuance the game has, and how right in the fucking face it is about it in the remake.

@MC_BatCommander I agree with you on the moral quandary, but from Avalanche's perspective, it was their bomb that did the damage. The moral quandary is still there, but as players, we see a wider scope of it. Their bomb did shit, but Shinra did the damage to their own reactor for whatever reason. I have no idea why they felt the need to do this, as they could have just ignored the bombing and repaired the damage. I guess playing Avalanche up as the terrorist group to play up Shinra as the benevolent overlords is worth more than the billions of gil and thousands of lives cost.

Play the original. Without spoiling specific details (but arguably major spoilers for FF7R), the Remake is an alternate reality and technically a sequel to the original. In some ways it builds off your expectations from having played the original game.

Personally, I think it's information everybody should probably know prior to playing the game. Post 11 is basically half of what I put in the spoiler tag anyway. FF7R is also a strange situation since it is a prologue and a remake, so it's difficult to say what is actually a spoiler and what is not in some ways. But spoiler tags just to be safe, and I wouldn't click them if you're sensitive to spoilers.

Someone? No. 'Marco' by himself has no bearing on any other person, but he represents an event that's rather central to the plot of FFVII. We don't hear about it until much later in the game, so they're just 'sick' at this stage.

Heh. Barret hums the Victory Fanfare when you talk to him on the train in chapter 5. The first instance of it in this game.

Fucking damnit. I'm trying to keep my AP from being wasted on materia, so I'm cycling out those that have reached AP cap. There aren't any that have hit it yet, save for one: Assess. Unfortunately, to scan enemies, I _need_ to have it equipped. The only person that's in my party 100% of the time is Cloud, so I guess I'm wasting a slot on a maxed out materia. :/

my complaint is, i'm seemingly halfway through the game and i still haven't gotten another weapon for cloud. I've been using that weapon you get from the dealer in the slums ever since i got int, and none of the shops have offered anything :/

I wonder if the upgrade mechanic is replacing new weapons. I mean this is just Midgar, I still have no idea how they're gonna scale this

As far as I can tell, it's a mixture of the two. There are new weapons to buy/find, but they're relatively interspersed throughout the story. To make sure your weapons don't fall victim to power creep, you can upgrade them. I only have 2 weapons on Cloud right now, and they both have their own SP to pull from when upgrading, meaning that they aren't shared at all. This also means that you could _theoretically_ spec weapons based on whether you want to focus on magic or physical, then swap between them as the situation demands (given enough foresight; you can't swap equip/materia in battle).

2 problems are rearing their heads for me. I don't like how linear the game is. It's just another series of pretty corridors as the game funnels you through its mission structure. Granted, there are times where there's a dissonance (We have to hurry?! Let me check everything but where we ought to go first.) that this addresses, but it's frustrating to deal with at times, especially in the Corkscrew Corridor before getting to Mako Reactor 5.

The 2nd problem is the fucking annoying bullet sponge aspect of the bosses. I mean, yeah, they have armour plating and all, which makes sense, but fucking hell, I hate chip damage. Air Buster is annoying as fuck to deal with.

2nd try at Air Buster went much better, now that I knew what I was dealing with.

I think I figured it out. The phantasms are there to ensure that things happen as they happen in the base game. Jessie was all set to go on the bombing run to reactor 5, but pulled up lame because of those phantasms. I thought they were just going to control her when it happened, but seeing them spirit Cloud and Aerith into the back of the church, then not attack them cemented it. I wouldn't have got it if @645AR hadn't kept blathering on about how it's a sequel. So, thank you for that.

I'm starting to get frustrated with the structure of the game. I'm probably just going to beat it and move on. I'm on chapter 8 right now, which by my reckoning is a little under half way through the game. I'm playing this game, and all it's really doing is making me want to go play the original again.

Start with the original, and then play the remake.

The remake greatly expands on the Midgar section of the original game, but also goes in an...interesting direction towards the end of it.

The pacing is pretty eh at times. I feel I'm getting inundated with cutscenes and walking-simulator sections where you're forced to follow slowly behind characters and not deviate from the path. These sections are worse than the cutscenes because they're not skippable. I can see this sort of thing really deterring people from replaying the game.

This frustrated the fuck out of me in chapter 8.I hate how the game funnels you along until you reach a hub, and then you can backtrack to your heart's content within a specific allotted place.
