Do you like it?

Technically yes, but it hasn't been active at any point since I moved in. As for why people join them, it's often a condition of living in the specific neighborhood. So if there's a house you want to buy and it has a HoA attached, you either suck it up or find another house.

Yes. Its virtually impossible to find a home that isnt part of an HOA in SoCal. But luckily ours is only like $55 a month and fairly hands off, except the time we got cited for having long grass in our front yard. I have friends paying $200-300 a month.

When I bought my first house and my current one I told my realtor no HOA under any circumstances.

My sister was paying a couple hundred a month at her old place, but it also included lawn service and it was a gated community with security guards onsite. Still, I couldn't see paying that much just to be in the neighborhood

yes

they collect money, don't seem to do anything with it, and don't really do anything except complain about lawns and trash cans left out too long

Fuck no. That was number one on our list of requirements when buying a house. Not paying a monthly fee for some old shitheads who couldn't make it in real politics to tell me what I can and can't do with my own property.

I did. I did everything to piss them off while I lived there too.

Yes I live in an HOA, the dues are $75 a year and they are really chill and lenient about everything you can think of.

I do live in an HOA, but I definitely have a grudge against them. My BF is actually on the board just to make sure the HOA doesn't enforce or create annoying rules.

Ours is pretty perfect though. The main thing that HOAs complain about is your front yard. And in our case the HOA is responsible for the community yard (the setup is very condo-ish).
