i've been having an issue where my internet speeds spike sporadically at any given time. this happens all day, no matter what time of day.

running a speed test on wifi for both my computer and phone return download speeds ranging from 5Mbps to 70Mbps. i ran both repeatedly for a couple minutes straight and it was all over the board. doesn't matter where in the house i am. doesn't matter if i'm on the 2.4 band or the 5 band. when i hardwire my computer to the modem directly, i get a consistent 80-110Mbps.

i've replaced my modem and router with new ones hoping either would fix the issue. i've used different cables connecting the modem and the router. i've switched out the coax cable to the modem.

my last guess is there's just some sort of insane interference with the signal going on....but wtf could it be? my sporadic signal doesn't get any better or worse depending on my location in the house.

the connection is so spotty that my google home speakers just stop playing music randomly. i can't work remotely from home because my remote desktop pauses consistently and for long periods trying to reestablish the connection. my wife can't tutor her students via video chat because her video quality is so bad.

how do i fix this

Have you tried using a hard wire to see if you get stable internet speeds on your PC?

Wifi can tend to be wonky depending on interference.

update: even wiring my laptop to the router (which is wired to the modem) gives me varying speeds, although still at a higher average than wireless

i still get occasional harsh drops down to 15-25 Mbps

What are the speeds youre paying for?

Also the speed test is stable from modem to computer but varies from router to computer?

Make sure your power saving settings aren't disabling the wireless card in your PC or Laptop. I had an issue where my wireless card was set to low priority or something so Windows basically kept turning it off and turning it back on.

Does your ISP provide the modem or did you buy it? Same for the router?

What are the models of them?

paying for 150Mbps with cox

yes, modem to computer seems fine and consistent. router to computer is up and down (but not as crazy as wifi).

i checked those settings. that's not at play here. plus it's on all of my devices including phones, game systems.

I bought. my old setup was an Arris SurfBoard SB6141 and a TPLINK AC1900. I've upgraded both to a Netgear CM500 and TPLINK AC2300, respectively.

both combos had this issue

Will the ISP provide their own modem for you to try and see if that resolves the issue?

Could be some kind of wiring issue or something on the ISP side. I would try using their issued equipment to see if it resolves it. It probably wont but its something to eliminate.

Also does your router or modem provide the WiFI? What kind of WiFI is it? 5g? 2.4?

This sounds like a COX issue more than anything.

I have COX, they suck ass, I have the same issues you have but never got it resolved. I wish you luck.

The ISP would be my prime suspect in this situation

Your hardwire could be going nutso and you not realize it.

My hardwire stays the consistent speed it's supposed to be at, but I have noticed it'll do massive dips from time to time as well. Maybe not as awful as the wifi is, or near as sporadic, but it happens to me occasionally.

Wifi definitely sucks ass no matter what from my experience.

wifi is obviously not ideal but i should be able to maintain video calls and remote connections without regular drops

i'm not going to keep paying $65 a month for internet i can't even use
