yes, I believe the story is embellished by the writer for effect, but taken at face value, Id say the waitress was the jerk.

Edit: As for your question. The waiter is wrong. The first thing is assuming everyone has extra money. The second thing is giving a long speech of why he thinks he deserves a tip. He should have just left it.

Expecting a tip from university students is rather optimistic and berating them for not giving one is exceedingly poor form.

That said, not at least giving some sort of tip beyond a few cents is rather miserly.

Ive screwed up and not had money for a tip and apologized directly to the waitress. That courtesy should be common, but mistakes happen. Waitress is an ass for screaming "GIMME MINE!".

Its part of the job. A dentist cant smack a kid and tell him to fuck off for being a little shit. Its part of the job.

They get paid minimum wage if they don't make enough tips to make up the hourly difference. If it comes down to that though it means they're really shitty at their job. Besides that lot waitstaff in America don't want minimum wage or slightly above because it's a massive pay cut. Furthermore when people stiff it isn't hurting the owner or corporate, they still get theirs. It only hurts the little man, pissing on the bottom of a totem pole.

If there was no tipping system that wouldn't be close to the correct amount, it'd be a lot more expensive. I wonder if these college kids still eat there if that was the case.

2) that's literally not even true, as it would be illegal. If tips don't supplement their income enough, the employer has to cover the difference and pay at least minimum.

If the student writing this didn't embellish at all, I agree. Both parties are dicks about the situation. If you are going to sit down and eat at a restaurant, make sure you have the funds to pay the bill and tip. Don't be a cheap prick. Also don't be an entitled prick that chases patrons down when they stiff you. It's incredibly immature and unprofessional.

The uni students should feel bad and should've at least apologized.

The server should've been fired, as they crossed the line. They're obviously not cut out for the service industry if they can't swallow the L and move on with their night. Things like getting stiffed on a tip are gonna happen.

Money is money to me. Could care less either way if I get the end product or service at the cost I am willing to pay. I've tipped 20% on average my whole adult life and have never encountered these fabled entitled waitstaff. Not saying they don't exist. Just that I think they are fewer and far between than people would like others to believe.

As a former server, yes. They make good money because of tips...especially in certain areas. I used to tell my co-workers to stop complaining about one single table not tipping when easily 99.9% of people tip above 15%.

That's not even really the case. I don't know a single sit down resturant, where you would tip, that doesn't allow you to order for carry out thereby bypassing "having" to tip. Honestly people in here calling waitstaff entitled are just as entitled themselves. If you don't want to spend your money on tipping then you absolutely don't have to.
