There is no disease process that this thing follows, I've never seen or heard of anything like this. Its not as simple as pneumonia. You will hear commonly that it causes "ARDS"...its most similar to ARDS which is why we call it that, but this is different, its something else that is managed differently. We are trying our best, the critical care community is actually very close, we are discussing our observations with people all around the world and trying to come up with the best management plans together. I think we have some ideas but we really don't know for sure. I've also seen these guys do okay, get a bit worse, maybe turn a corner and start to get better, then the next thing you know they just tank within hours and die - likely from heart problems.

Again, I dont know the recovery rates of non-critical patients, I dont know how they do in general. But once they are intubated, its a completely different game and its a major uphill battle.

So don't think, "I'm young, I'll come off the ventilator" I've seen 2 patients in their 20s die. Try your best to just not get it. I'm slightly paranoid cuz I was in the room with alot of these patients. The nurses are the true heroes who have to constantly go in the rooms.

statistically most people are fine

The stats make it more scary. 50% of ICU cases that go to completion end up in deaths. Death as a % of all ICU cases is around 15%.

I hope when all is said and done and we have more days these numbers are a lot lower.

Recent testing done in Italy tends to trend towards this but this was a limited study on 60 people. Germany are currently in the middle of a much bigger test so when these results come in it will be interesting.

Yeah I think at the moment that is what the data suggests. Itll only get worse as they make tougher decisions meaning only the most serious care hit ICU. Check the link I posted.

I have held another human being in my arms while they died from lack of oxygen and a ventilator would no longer do anything.

It is horrific.

Doubt anyone would. Not sure thats a fair comparison though.
