Went in blind, and it was hyped as this super duper scary game. And now that I'm done, I didn't get that vibe from it. Especially the last section of the game, it's more emotional and heart tugging than anything. Not to say I didn't enjoy it and I regret playing it. Only a couple of times did I really feel scared or unsettled throughout the playthrough.

I always felt so sad about Lisa, especially in the scene where she realizes what's happened to her and begins to transform:

Yeah I think that may have been the problem. Like I've seen stuff in other more recent games more disturbing than anything that happened in SH. I'd imagine when that game first came out it was groundbreaking though. I'm still glad I got to finally experience it though

This game was much scarier when it came out vs now. Though the limitations of the hardware (The fog, the janky character models) really leaned into the unsettling nature of what they were trying to convey.

Eh the hospital was my first real freak out moment. Because you got the nurse enemies that were in uniform, that really unsettled me the first time I encountered it, nothing in the school really unsettled me.

Agree. It's aged like bad CG in movies. Silent Hill 2 and 3 both look good and feels good to play.

The first game doesn't have that same cheese factor that the first Resident Evil had. RE feels like a fun 80s monster movie.

Silent Hill 2 isn't scary due to the monsters but because the idea of your young wife becoming deathly ill and killing her is fucking terrifying, that's why Silent Hill 2 is brilliant.

So 2 is its own thing but 3 is more direct. Would you say that those games are worthwhile if I enjoyed the first? This isn't like some Jurassic Park thing is it where the next 2 installments are kinda shit but have their defenders? Are they really good? Because I really want to delve further in this but I also have other games in my list I need to get to but I've been in kind of a horror mood lately

SH2 is widely considered the best of the franchise. It's the only one I've played and I can attest that it's really good.

SH3 is also considered to be good.

It's after that where things start getting a little shaky.

What, the body that falls out of a separate locker? It was a cutaway scene and it was a little tense. But idk it just didn't get me for whatever reason. Not what I would call a jumpscare. And not gonna lie the cat thing got me more. After that I felt like it was a repeat so I kind of braced myself for something real to happen this next time and it was underwhelming.

Silent Hill 2 is one of the best horror games ever made.

But none of them are very scary. Silent Hill goes for atmosphere and tension over being scary.

If you're looking for Jumpscares then something like Outlast or Fatal Frame might be more your thing

Also Shattered Memories is a re-telling (not a remake) of the original Silent Hill. This kind of causes some continuity errors if you subscribe to any sort of timeline.

Really, SH2 is sad/eerie while SH3 is creepy/mental. Fyi, the pattern for the Silent Hill series is odd-numbered games (1, 3, 5/0rigins, 7/Shattered Memories--SH1 re-imagined) for the main story and even-numbered games (2/Restless Dreams, 4/The Room, 6/Homecoming, 8/Downpour) for stories from nearby communities.

You can play the even numbered SH games in any order, but the odd-numbered SH story-line goes 5/0rigins, 1, 3, with Shattered Memories as the only RFYL "revisit" game (no combat; a camera-phone is your primary means of untangling mysteries while the game tries to analyze and misdirect you).

I remember being pumped seeing the movie. I mean, c'mon, it was by the man behind Brotherhood of the Wolf so it had to be good. Visually, it's fantastic with a dreadful and tense ambiance. Then it goes downhill as it dumps exposition at the end just like a video game to the point it feels like satire.

Also, the monsters looked fantastic, but feel like empty shells without the lore behind them to explain why they're even there. That's what I dig about the Silent Hill games is that the creatures are twisted versions of...something. People, memories, whatever. Like the children in the first game are Alessa's classmates and the way they gang up on you is similar to how they picked on her, only distorted to creepy proportions as they're creations through Alessa. Or something like that. It's been too long since I've played the first game.

The first movie really nails that disassociated, dreamlike uncertainty of the first game. Many people shit on the sequel but I actually feel that it gives fans what they were missing in the first film. I had the privelege of seeing it in 3D and was not disappointed.

I think that's why I came away disappointed from the first film. It was so close to nailing it, but missed the landing. It's still a worthwhile watch.

I've seen the sequel. Heck, I think I even own it yet I remember nothing about it other than Sean Bean and Kit Harington are in it. I should give it another spin sometime.

I'd pretty heavily disagree about them being empty shells in the movie. The Lying Figure is Alessa being wrapped up in bandages and trapped in her bed. The Grey Children are her bullying classmates, trapped forever as kids who are perpetually burning alive. The Janitor is pretty obvious, as are the bugs he creates. The Nurses are the same symbolism as the game.

The only one that doesn't have overt symbolism is Pyramid Head. Even then, he's pretty clearly Alessa's personal bodyguard/assassin.

I'm not a fan of nowhere.
Not having map is a bit frustrating, the puzzles got way easier, it's all recycled areas and recycled enemies yeah. Though I think this is where the PAL version is a bit better, Grey Children were censored in the school which sucks, but the invisible Grey Children I believe were in Nowhere for the first time and they were pretty creepy but it's the first time you heard them.
I get what they were going for and I'm sure it's highly important to the lore but it's my least favourite "dungeon" in SH.
