Why was that the case? Did people just get more violent?

Because the economy turned to shit and desperate people realized doors were open and homes were easy to rob.

No, people are getting more civilized. That's a lie. Less violence across the board. The US is still very violent and homicidal compared to other developed countries, but murder is still decreasing per capita.

It's because everyone lived in tiny isolated settlements were everyone knew each other. If you walked into someone else's house and took their shit, it wouldn't be difficult to figure out who ("Gee, Tim's wood carving went missing last week, but Fred just got a new wood carving recently?") and they'd all go and beat the shit out of them.

People who say shit like that are just nostalgic, ignorant and wanting to put down the current generations.

You can now. It's just that bad news is more widespread now. When bad stuff happened then, you wouldn't hear about it.

This is correct, we're safer now than we've ever been, and that trend continues to improve. But our media is also more efficient at putting the most egregious and heinous violations in our faces, all the time, so people have difficulty recognizing how safe it actually is.

That's not to say that the risks don't exist, they do, just far less common than people think.

Back when people used to live in smaller, tight-knit communities and you knew all your neighbors. Some still don't in the country side and small towns. We didn't always keep our doors locked in mine.

It's safe to assume there's a good chance you will risk being killed in the event that you decide it's a good idea to rob a random farm house in the US so it takes a special kind of insane person or maybe someone close to the people that live there in more rural areas.

I know people that don't lock their doors and they all seem to be assured by an arsenal of weapons.
