They seem so dirty. They grow off of dead matter (and sometimes live matter, like parasites!). They explode into spores that go everywhere. Are they not just multicellular viruses? The idea of touching or eating something like that revolts me. I know they often taste just fine, but that's the most confounding part of it. How can they have that texture when they are what they are? I expect every one to explode into dusty white spores in my mouth and kill me.

I mean, is your food typically alive when you eat it? Mushrooms are just a little slower on the draw. The mental image you described in that last sentence is gross, but you know it's not gonna happen.

I imagine it's the same thing as how any of us feel disgust for the idea of eating insects or cats / dogs. Even horses (used secretly in stuff like cheap lasagna and low quality doner kebab?) can make people feel disgust.

It may be safe or taste good to some people, but we have the idea deep in our minds that eating these things is "bad" or "disgusting". In your case it's just the mushrooms, children commonly feel the same for broccoli or other greens.
