Every 1.5 million claims is about 1% increase in unemployment. So we're at about 7-8% increase right now.

Well yeah. So many states have non-essential business closure mandates. All those people still need a paycheck, a lot of them have no option other than unemployment. We had to essentially lay off 90% of our employees at my restaurant.

That's what happens when you declare that their jobs are nonessential and tell them to stay home and file for unemployment.

The Coronavirus small business should cause people to hire. From what was explained to me by our svp of finance if 75% is spent on payroll the loan doesn't need to be paid back.

And the extra 600/week obviously helps. Either crazy situation, hopefully people are taken care of enough to get through

When is it time to file? The day your job actually stops paying you, or if you know when they will, should you file ahead of time?

The same day you're fired/furloughed/laid-off/etc., if possible. There's a waiting week before the checks start coming in.

after you're fired/let go, there's no delay required to file. Benefits might not start until the following week, google will help you out there. As my job is fairly secure i haven't had a need to look into with any depth.

If your state is like mine, your unemployment website is not equipped to handle the increased load and it's difficult to get through on the phone as well. It's gonna be a much longer wait on my unemployment checks than a week.

What are we doing?

Even assuming worst-case scenario, I don't even think the worst models would have everyone fall sick and out of work at the same time for 3 weeks and counting.

"The curve" is important but it's not everything. We can't focus on one stat on paper while every other stat crumbles. We need some real world solutions and not "just wait around for a vaccine in maybe a year"

Well if people actually listened, a stay at home ordinance for a month would have taken a huge dent out of that curve. Then week by week people are let to return to normal activities while wearing masks, sanitizing things regularly and still avoiding large group activities as best as possible.

But that's not what happened.

This is like saying you'll just eat cookies and ice cream and have a well balanced diet.

Isolation isn't about stopping the virus, it's not going to happen, people don't operate in that way. It's about slowing the growth rate so hospitals don't get over burdened, which means people without coronavirus are impacted in the care they can get too, and creating a larger problem. The virus is going to run it's course until people have been infected and develop immunity or a vaccine is created.

Keep in mind, most jobless workers don't claim unemployment. So that's a low estimate of the actually unemployed.

But taking that plus the 3.3 new claims last week and the 4 or so million that were unemployed before and we're eyeballing about 10% unemployment, peak great recession levels

Why would they not claim unemployment? Low IQs?

This recession is very different from any other on record. It's progressing pretty differently. Not saying you can't blame capitalism but it's atypical

That's completely disregarding my first statement of people staying at home for a month. Why just nitpick one part of my argument while ignoring the rest.

China started to return to normal a few weeks ago. They essentially spent a month in isolation (outside of the heavily hit Hubei province and other smaller epiceners), and week by week more businesses are returning to work. As of now, the only places still not operating are entertainment related (movie theaters), tourist related (scenic indoor areas) and schools. The only increase major cities in China have seen in this time are from returning Chinese nationals who were abroad. By completely forcing a lockdown for the extended period of time, they were able to limit the amount of people in hospital, generate more tests, start tracking the cases that appeared and come up with procedures of what to do when people started to return to work. Then when things reopened slowly, they tracked everything extensively to make sure they didn't see a high spike.

This is not the case of eating cookies and ice cream. You can't just make up a dumb ass analogy and assume it fits.

China started shutting down in January and had to close things back down after they tried opening up

Your first part was equally as wrong. Do you feel happier now snowflake? There is no one month solution to this problem beyond infecting everyone and saying fuck it treat yourself at home good luck. Which again falls back to, people don't work that way.

my roommate lasted up till now with full hours.
my brother lasted i think a week or so ago.

they're covered since they started to file for unemployment despite temporarily furlough. won't have to worry about rent coming up but it's going to suck with these sanctions on beach access (previously open until the tourists came). punishes the community as a whole.
