People confuse tolerance with open acceptance. Tolerance is allowing something to be even though you don't necessarily agree with it or like it. You tolerate it. That's literally what it is.

What a lot of people mean when they say that they are being tolerant is that they embrace said thing that they are supposedly tolerating, and they don't actually tolerate ideas or mindsets that they don't like.

If you're tolerating something, you're not being super supportive of it.

I tolerate my neighbors cat shitting on my lawn. I don't encourage or support it, but I also don't lace my lawn with anti freeze.

Don't be confused and think that I'm saying you should tolerate a racist person, but also understand that people aren't as tolerant as they like to say they are, as they USUALLY reject ideas that offend them. If a person is actually tolerant of ideas they don't agree with, they'll probably be something like "You know what, I don't agree with you and what you're saying, but I also do believe I shouldn't have the power to control you and your thoughts and actions".

When it comes to a person who's thoughts and actions are extremely dangerous (like a staunch racist person) to those around them, then tolerating them is probably not ideal.

In one of the religion topics someone basically said that the Jews who left Israel 2000 years ago aren't real Jews. I could have said "fuck off anti-semite" but instead I gave him a history lesson.

If he would have came back saying the same thing, there would be several ways to respond. You could basically roll your eyes and stop talking to him. You could say "you are scientifically incorrect and also saying something antisemetic" or whatever version of that. Or you could say "fuck off anti-semite". The third of which happens to be against the TOS while being an objectively worse response than the other two.

Maybe try using nuance.

But exchanges like the one TC gave don't actually happen. In reality things are much more subtle than that. It's very possible that the guy I was talking about was actually just ignorant. Telling someone to "fuck off" solves nothing and will just make them angrier or more hateful if anything. You know that plenty of people have changed or actually been converted from having racist views right? Once people have a racist ideology, they aren't stuck that way. And the same is true for people with progressive ideologies, or any ideology. There's another problem when people who aren't really (insert pejorative) aren't actually that, but are called that in a form of political divisiveness.

And the "community enforcement" you're talking about sounds a lot like vigilante justice, which I hope you understand is not actually justice.

There are those who do change and I'm happy for them. Kudos to anyone who has the patience to explain to a KKK member why their mentality is fucked. That doesn't mean we're all obligated to treat them kindly. They didn't coddle the people they killed after all.

Obviously you're not obligated to tolerate someone's racism, but you're not helping anyone or anything by flaming someone. And going beyond just words, some people believe someone being racist is justification for physical violence/vigilante justice against them. Do you think that's OK?

Couple this in with the fact that people decide on the fly what's "racist" or not and you run into issues.

Racism is openly expressing hatred or inciting violence against a group of people based on their race. You're not a Nazi for suggesting Israel should step the fuck off Palestine.

As for violence?

Do I think someone should be punched in the face for saying the N word? No.

Am I going to be upset when it happens? Absolutely not. When you say hateful things, people are likely to respond unkindly. People like to poke bears, then get really salty when that bear decides to maul them.

If your ideology is to hurt people based off their race, don't expect me to feel bad if you get hurt in turn.
