The plot of the game itself I get because it's fairly straightforward. Salamandra broke into Castle Witcherstein to steal secrets, now the Witchers are hunting them. At the same time, there's a non-human rebellion that ignites into a full-on war.

But Chapter 3 looks like it's heading more towards the setting and I have no fucking clue what's going on with the backstory. There was a war with Nilfgaard and that's about all I've retained from reading the in-game books.

something i found very helpful is the in-game character glossary. basically every time you have a scene with a character and you dont really know whats going on or think you're missing some backstory, check the character glossary. it's written in a conversational way and will contain all relevant info of that character and whats going on with them, and it updates in real time

I've been doing that, but I still feel like there's just big chunks I'm missing.

I guess that's to be expected when you sort of come in halfway through a fantasy storyline though.
