People always throw around that X historical figure had two nobel prizes, but what does that even mean exactly? That a small comittee liked them? How is it prestigious at all?

Peace prizes are very subjective.

The other ones are still kinda subjective, but less so.

It means something, but its a weird metric to only award a few of them at a time. You could have three revolutionary scientific breakthroughs in the year, and even if all three dwarfed every other achievement in history, only two could receive the prize (or something like that)

its particularly weird to me with the peace prize, because how do you qualify one act being more deserving than another

Iirc the prize wasnt given to Obama for anything he had done, but as an encouragement to pursue peaceful ways to resolve middle east issues. Remember we had been in Iraq/Afghanistan for more than 6 years at that point.

also he actually caused a lot of war. he was known for his use of drones, many of which accidentally killed civilians

Blue Monk still has me on block or ignore or whatever, cause I dared to say Obama didn't deserve that prize

Obama got it just for not being Bush.

It made me laugh my ass off at the time-- and I voted for him, so I'm not some bitter conservative-- it was just that Bush was so incredibly terrible that the world rejoiced when Obama was going to replace him.

Some of it is pretty subjective and they've definitely made mistakes before... but to get a nobel prize in physics and then another nobel prize in chemistry is goddamn impressive.

Why are you equating the Peace prize to the awards they hand out for sciences.

Just a dumb comparison.
