What exactly makes the one ring so powerful? When the evil dude wore it, it just seemed to give him more strength to knock dudes back in that battle but he still died like a bitch in one hit. And with the hobbits it just turns them invisible. Not exactly shit that could rule the world. And why did Gollum ever bother taking the ring off? It made him randy.

it binds a bit of his spirit to middle earth, which made him functionally immortal unless it was destroyed. beyond that it acted as a conduit through which he could enslave anyone wearing the other rings.

The Ring's primary powerwas control of the other Rings of Power and domination of the wills of their users. The Ring also conferred power to dominate the wills of other beings whether they were wearing Rings or notbut only in proportion to the user's native capacity.

I might be remembering wrong, but I think there were some corrupted dwarves. I think the rings also made them gold crazy and greedy as well. There were dwarves from the far east who were allied with Sauron. The elves immediately sensed when Sauron made the one ring and took theirs off and then put them on when it was safe after Sauron got defeated in the last alliance.

made the dwarves more greedy, something they were already predisposed to. its why, at least in the books, sauron wanted to give them back some rings if they'd help find the one.

as for the elves rings, had sauron recapture his one ring they'd have had to take off theirs. pretty sure either elrond or galadriel says that while he was a wraith he had no power over them (since he had no hand in their construction), but if he had regained his body they'd be open to him.
