I don't want this to devolve into a topic bashing religion, but personally, I've always found that a bit odd and counterintuitive. Aren't we suppose to love God and shit? Not be afraid of him?

Both, of course.
The way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. Go read up on a guy named Korah and try to tell me the phrase isn't appropriate. --- 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 53 ... I've never liked the phrase "god-fearing". Can't think of a time when fear and paranoia actually brought the best out of people.
Edit: And considering that most Christians I know literally believe that their belief in god/religion will help them avoid a fiery eternal punishment, I do take the "fear" to be literal fear and not reverence. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
