I don't want this to devolve into a topic bashing religion, but personally, I've always found that a bit odd and counterintuitive. Aren't we suppose to love God and shit? Not be afraid of him?

Both, of course.

The way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless, but it is the ruin of those who do evil.

Go read up on a guy named Korah and try to tell me the phrase isn't appropriate.

In the bible it describes fear of God and hope for his mercy as wisdom because those who fear God seek to please him

It's more fearing the consequences of sin

It makes sense, I suppose.

It's awe and reverence.

It's like how faith in christianity means confidence or trust.

I've never liked the phrase "god-fearing". Can't think of a time when fear and paranoia actually brought the best out of people.

Edit: And considering that most Christians I know literally believe that their belief in god/religion will help them avoid a fiery eternal punishment, I do take the "fear" to be literal fear and not reverence.
