I mean do you generally recall the main plot of FC and SC? If yeah, then sure. If not and reading a recap wouldn't be too much of a time commitment then do that.

I'm going through the 3rd right now having done the other two a good while back and I'm not having any trouble. They generally recap stuff pretty well.

Can't hurt to read a recap, though. The worldbuilding is the biggest strength of the series, you might as well make sure you enjoy it as much as possible.

Yeah, a general recap should be fine. Trails the 3rd doesn't really advance the overall plot. It's mostly wrapping up loose ends from FC and SC.

I didn't say that! It's important. It's more wrapping up Sky and setting the stage for the Crossbell and Erebonia arcs than advancing a story of its own though.
