Trump suggested chloroquine phosphate, commonly used to clean aquariums, as a "game changer" against the cornavirus, a couple in their 60s decided to try it. Thirty minutes later they were admitted to a hospital. The man died and the woman is currently in critical condition.

Isn't that a treatment for malaria? It only suppresses the symptoms, it's not a cure.

He didn't recommend people take aquarium cleaning tabs. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquin phosphate are antimalarial agents that are showing some efficacy with the disease. He oversold its role in disease managment, though.

If Trump suggested water against fire, people would immediately discredit it because he said it.

It's a very slanted half-truth. His tweet was misinformed and unnecessary, and for your average medically ignorant citizen it leaves room to interpretation. But then again your average citizen won't go searching for unprescribed medications, that's called an idiot.

But for people mentioning that chloroquine phosphate is found in aquarium cleaning tablets, that's so disingenuous and you are truly showing your own complete idiocy for both not knowing chloroquin phosphate's (and hydroxychloroquine's) longstanding known medical uses and also not knowing investigated treatments for this disease.

The FDA already approved it, and even approved it as a preventative measure for children who will be traveling in areas affected by malaria. It's also perfectly legal for doctors to prescribe medications for off-label use. That said, I suppose this is a good example of why it's illegal for a drug company to advertise off-label uses, and why it's illegal for drug companies to advertise prescription medications in most of the rest of the world.

On that note, why the hell is quinine illegal now?
From 1969, to 1992, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received 157 reports of health problems related to quinine use, including 23 which had resulted in death. In 1994, the FDA banned the marketing of over-the-counter quinine as a treatment for nocturnal leg cramps. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals had been selling the brand name Legatrin for this purpose. Also sold as a Softgel (by SmithKlineBeecham) as Q-vel. Doctors may still prescribe quinine, but the FDA has ordered firms to stop marketing unapproved drug products containing quinine. The FDA is also cautioning consumers about off-label use of quinine to treat leg cramps. Quinine is approved for treatment of malaria, but was also commonly prescribed to treat leg cramps and similar conditions. Because malaria is life-threatening, the risks associated with quinine use are considered acceptable when used to treat that affliction.[65]
Though Legatrin was banned by the FDA for the treatment of leg cramps, the drug manufacturer URL Mutual has branded a quinine-containing drug named Qualaquin. It is marketed as a treatment for malaria and is sold in the United States only by prescription. In 2004, the CDC reported only 1,347 confirmed cases of malaria in the United States.

He suggested it in a medical setting, and it has shown promising results in Australian and Israeli tests. A quick Google also appears to indicate that Chinese trials are also showing promising results against the Chinese coronavirus, if you can believe anything officially coming out of the PRC. And there seems to be confusion between hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine phosphate, which complicates matters, at least for the freewoman posting an hour after she just woke up.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/therapeutic-options.html
Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are oral prescription drugs that have been used for treatment of malaria and certain inflammatory conditions. Chloroquine has been used for malaria treatment and chemoprophylaxis, and hydroxychloroquine is used for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and porphyria cutanea <redacted because the gamefaqs swear filter is awful>. Both drugs have in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and other coronaviruses, with hydroxychloroquine having relatively higher potency against SARS-CoV-2 [1,4,5]. A study in China reported that chloroquine treatment of COVID-19 patients had clinical and virologic benefit versus a comparison group, and chloroquine was added as a recommended antiviral for treatment of COVID-19 in China [6]. Based upon limited in-vitro and anecdotal data, chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine are currently recommended for treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in several countries. Both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have known safety profiles with the main concerns being cardiotoxicity (prolonged QT syndrome) with prolonged use in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction and immunosuppression but have been reportedly well-tolerated in COVID-19 patients.

Due to higher in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 and its wider availability in the United States compared with chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine has been administered to hospitalized COVID-19 patients on an uncontrolled basis in multiple countries, including in the United States. One small study reported that hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with azithromycin reduced detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory tract specimens compared with a non-randomized control group but did not assess clinical benefit [7]. Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are associated with QT prolongation and caution is advised when considering these drugs in patients with chronic medical conditions (e.g. renal failure, hepatic disease) or who are receiving medications that might interact to cause arrythmias.

Hydroxychloroquine is currently under investigation in clinical trials for pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and treatment of patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19. In the United States, several clinical trials of hydroxychloroquine for prophylaxis or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection are planned or will be enrolling soon.

That said, a number of different clinical studies are currently in progress all over the world, and in the U.S., the National Institutes of Health is looking to fill a 400-volunteer study that will provide clinical results related to use of remdesivir, an antiviral drug developed by Gilead originally as a treatment for Ebola, but its still only in clinical trials even for treatment of that disease. This study could also add other drug candidates as additional test therapies. Meanwhile, studies in China and France have examined the effectiveness of anti-malarial drugs, including chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine including one small-scale study that suggests the positive effects of hydroxycholoroquine in reducing both the duration and symptoms of COVID-19 in combination with an antibiotic called azithromycin.
