Watch Dogs 2 isn't as good as GTA V but it comes close

The first one though, god no. The simple fact that you could kill all the gang bangers and then you had to leave the leaders alive ruined that game for me.

Yes actually they do. Sleeping Dogs is somehow oddly enough one of the most overrated games of that gen.

That's the only thing I would give it over GTA. They clearly prioritized more on the hand-to-hand combat (even if it was kind of jank and easily exploitable) opposed to GTA where all you had to do was mash melee until you won 100% of the time.

Grand Theft Auto V, on the other hand, was great all the way through, IMO.

That's exactly how I feel! Sleeping Dog's story starts out pretty interesting and promising. Then by the middle it just dive bombs in quality. They clearly didn't know how to handle some of the characters writing wise. And you can tell they were just trying to hurry and wrap the story up.

Meanwhile, GTAV was consistently great from beginning to end.

That reminds me off another major reason why I feel GTAV is the better game. The setting.
Sure, Hong Kong is a unique setting for a game like this, but it's just that... It's just an open world city inspired by Hong Kong that you do stuff in. Pretty basic.
Whereas Los Santos in GTAV, they went all in. The built an entire living and breathing ecosystem and pop culture within this world which seamlessly changes depending on which part of the map you're at. The city in and of itself feels like character itself and I love shit like that. They even go beyond that by making music ablums and stuff irl that reflects back into the game's world. So much thought went into the tiniest details of Los Santos and that's what makes it a much more interesting setting than Sleeping Dog's Hong Kong.

I didn't think Sleeping Dogs was fantastic but I probably liked it over GTAV.

Frankly I don't get why people like it that much, the game's plot and characters aren't good and the humor is really poor. The gameplay isn't anything to write about and they don't really do anything groundbreaking in terms of content.

I still enjoyed what it did over GTAV, and I didn't think Sleeping Dogs was a great game (which I said in the above post)

I'd take Sleeping Dogs mediocre combat over GTA's sloppy combat any day of the week.

The city also loses a lot of its magic when you realize all those skyscrapers are just a backdrop and the entire game takes places at ground level. It makes the game feel so small. Not to mention gun combat and driving were trash, both of which are pretty inexcusable for an open world crime game

I havent played a gta since 3 (I just couldnt ever get into the series) but played SD couple years ago to check out the hand to hand stuff and whatnot. Yeah the driving sucked but I did like that car jumping mechanic.

Earlier this year year I downloaded gta 5 on game pass to see what all the fuss is about, its not half bad, the driving is actually well done but I find myself thinking Im playing SD and keep jumping out of my car at full speed and eating pavement lol.

Don't even get me started on the driving. It's so fucking bad. At least it's kind of cool jumping on other people's cars.

The gun combat I can forgive to a certain extent because they definitely wanted to focus more on melee. The problem there is, the melee isn't amazing or anything (and it would really help if it was). It's kind of janky. You have games out there doing melee combat way better than SD.
So you have this reasonably dept, yet sloppy/janky melee system with bad gunplay. Compared to GTAV's very basic, yet, perfectly serviceable melee and simple, more polished easy to pick up gunplay. It's a no-brainer.

Also to the person talking about Vs melee, Id have to disagree. I always felt like melee combat one IV and V were very janky and not well polished.

GTAV has mediocre gameplay and a deeply disappointing story. Also, all three endings were shockingly bad. LS was fine, but the novelty of a simulated city lost its appeal after GTAIV for me. Driving is fine, nothing special. Heists were oversold/overhyped by the developers. I was really hoping they'd do good heists like the first one in single player DLC, but it has been left for their garbage online.

Despite all this though, it's something more than the sum of its parts. Though I'd give the gameplay and story a 5/10, it all comes together to like a 7 or an 8 for me.

I haven't played Sleeping Dogs in like 7 years so I don't really remember it that well. I remember it being pretty fun for its time.

You dont get the full flavour when you dont know cantonese though. Like when they say 'hum ga tsaan' the subtitles only translates it as 'motherfucker'. But hum ga tsaan really is like cursing someones whole family to die.

Meh. I disagree. I liked RDR2's writing and loved the characters, but I felt like the story in particular was a bit of a step down from GTAV and even RDR1. A little too slow at times, kind of repetitive and had an entire section that was pointless overall. And no, not the overtly long Epilogue.
One of those games where I finished it and enjoyed it enough overall, but have no plans to ever really playthrough it again.

I actually hope the next GTA leans hard into the sim aspects. I get why people didn't like it, but I felt like RDR2 was a game that was made specifically for my play style and I loved it. I remember when San Andreas came out and let you do the whole muscular/fat thing and building up individual skills, but then they just sort of dropped it after that. I want that stuff back

I'd rather play Saint's Row 2 than gtav.

Something about gta4+5 that just makes them a chore most of the time to play. Maybe due to the mission structure or characters.

And while the world is bigger and more fleshed out, there's really no reason to explore. A few Easter eggs but nothing to keep you going. No upgrades to find or unlock, or fun side minigames or missions.

Sleeping Dogs and Saint's Row2 are both better games, being more fun to play, even if the combat, driving, and map overall isn't as impressive.
